I've ducked and dodged all the Windows 11 upgrade prompts on my old laptop, but the new laptop has it pre-installed.

Should I stick with what I know or accept Windows 11 like I had to accept Windows 8?

Windows 11 is fine, the only thing I don't like is the redesigned start menu. Aside from that, it's basically just a service pack for 10. If you're familiar with 10, then hardly anything has changed in 11. There's nothing wrong with it and not worth the hassle in downgrading.

It doesnt matter, 11, 10, whatever the last MS OS was, Windows PC sucks. My current laptop, Windows 10, it has 16 GB of ram, and all I do with it is surf the web, and the most intensive thing I ever used it for was emulating GameCube, but half the time I open it up it hangs for minutes at a time when all I am trying to do is open up a website.

Explain how this is the fault of the OS.

I open up my computer, and I need to sit there for minutes for it to to get past the log in screen, then I need to to wait another 2 or 3 minutes while the curser is that spinning circle before I can do anything, even though the only app running is a browser. How is that not the fault of the damn OS?

Edit: turning off, or restarting it doesnt do any good. And my last laptop wasnt any better.

While I prefer windows 10 it's at the end if it's life. Just stick with 11.

Bloatware that comes with most laptops. Unless you're still using a laptop with an actual hard drive.

Yes, it is a few years old. It is a dell, with a 1 GB HDD.

You can make W11 appear and behave a lot like W10.

I hate the new right-click menu as well. Especially as it uses icons for Cut/Copy/Paste/etc.

Your HDD is in the process of dying. That will cause extremely slow load times like what you are seeing.

This is my biggest issue with Win11. Apparently there's a registry key you can edit so right click will display the full menu without clicking the more options button. Other than that and the Start menu, it's the same as Win10.

You can actually just disable it and go back to the old windows 10 style context menu. I changed it as soon as I upgraded to windows 11.

Your CPU is likely too new to run Windows 10 and even if you could, it'll be crippled.

Stop trying to do something stupid.

Windows 11 is awful. They nerfed right-click and ruined the taskbar with no option to fix it. Im not going to switch to an OS that removes QOL options for no reason.

Thanks. Glad there's a workaround but it really shouldn't require messing with the registry to get this functionality.

The larger problem is screwing with the registry means that later versions of the OS may just ignore this setting at Microsoft's discretion.

Upgrading to a SSD will definitely help

My laptop (haven't used it since 2019) with a hdd also has trouble with windows 10. When I first got it task manager showed the hard drive at 100% usage constantly even with few or no apps running. I found the cause to be related to the automatic updates feature so I turned that off. Helped reduce hdd usage to below 100% (but still pretty high) so it was somewhat usable but still not ideal.

So my last laptop can't be powered back on.

I have a nVME to USB so I can salvage my old data off the old SSD.

Will I need to do anything extra/specific to access the data since it should be behind a password? Or will I just be prompted for a password when trying to access the drive?

Laptop is still out for delivery.

"Maybe but no." What?

Regardless, your issue isn't the OS. You have some faulty hardware somewhere. Windows isn't some garbage OS that instantly makes your computer run like molasses.
