It can't compete with the original (not that I feel it tried to), but in terms of what it was? I liked it fairly well! The songs were the weakest part of the movie aside from the "For a Moment" scene, which I actually felt was pretty magical, but... otherwise, the story was good enough. I teared up at one of the last few scenes, so I can commend it for that much.

It pays heavy homage to the quirks and bizarre parts from the original movie that helped make it so memorable, but unless the second Wonka movie develops his character more, I find it hard to see how he ended up becoming the person he was in the classic. He's way too nice in this one, and he doesn't seem to have that darker edge that made Wonka himself a memorable character in the first place.

Other than the villain song, almost every other song in this movie was so forgettable and it doesn't help that Chalamet is just an okay singer. It would've benefitted a lot to get a broadway type of singer for the role, but Chalamet had enough charisma for the rest of the non-musical parts of the movie. Overall I enjoyed it and so did my niece and nephews. They got more appreciation for the original movie when we went back home and I showed them the original Willy Wonka movie.

Are you me TC? I also watched yesterday!

But yeah there needs to be a sequel where he becomes jaded and forgets his mission of bringing joy bc this version isn't the same dude we got in the OG. it was fine overall tho.

I didn't really like the villain song, >.< . I thought it was a bit weird, and not in a charming way.

I feel like there could have been better picks, but Timothy did a good job overall. I do agree, though... his singing voice wasn't as strong as I would've liked, but it was serviceable.

I found out it had finally been added to Max and had the spare time and energy, so I just gave it a shot yesterday, lol.

Don't get me wrong, I think Willy in the original was kind, but... that wasn't his only personality trait. He was also jaded and cynical, so I feel like the sequel may need to show something that made that side of his personality come out. I personally imagine that he was betrayed by someone important to him at some point and that was what started to sour him, but... this is something we could see in the sequel if they do it right.

Definitely agree. It felt like they were trying to make a generic studio cashgrab but they accidentally hired people who cared in front of and behind the camera.

Literally the only reason I went from immediate dismissal to interested was learning it had the director of the Paddington movies.

I don't need another movie showing me how he became jaded in the significant time period period this prequel and the Gene Wilder movie. I see all the stress and struggle he goes through just to get hus empire started. I can imagine the stress and struggle he went through for the last several decades. Slowly wearing away at the happy, care free side of him. They tell us about some of it in the Gene Wilder movie. You shouldn't need another movie to connect these obvious dots. You should be able to do it and see the picture for yourself.

A second movie has basically already been confirmed, so whether you see the potential for it or not, there does need to be a story worth telling in the next entry. The shift in his temperament is a logical leap from there, although the main thing we may get is something about how so many Oompa Loompas came to be in his employment. He gives a "reason" for it in the original, but with how much he loves to give non-answers or misdirects, there's no reason to believe what he said.

Make no mistake, I'm not tapping my toes to the villain song but my issue with this movie is that none of the songs stand out except for the villain song for how weird and unexpected it was. That's probably my only problem with this movie, the musical numbers were alright, though with that said some of the chereography and shots were done really well. I still enjoyed the movie because I'm just a sucker for musicals in general, but it could've been better.

I watched it on Friday and it was alright. I liked Chalamet in it, but its only ever seen him play a fuckboi, love interest l, or this-Dune-paycheck-is-good role. As a whole, the movie wasnt terrible, but Im not compelled to watch it again. If I were a parent, Id rather my kid watch that on repeat than a Disney movie starring Awkwafina at least.
