SAN FRANCISCO INT'L AIRPORT A car was crushed and vehicles were damaged in a parking lot at San Francisco International Airport, after a tire fell off a United Airlines jet during takeoff Thursday morning.

According to airport officials, around 11:35 a.m., United Airlines Flight 35 lost a piece of its landing gear. Tire debris from the Boeing 777-200 landed in an employee parking lot at the airport.

One of the vehicles was crushed from the falling tire.

"You say the wheel fell off from where?" asked William, an SFO worker who came back to his car, just two spots away from the crushed car. "I'm so lucky. Just two cars away. I'm almost the one."

After crushing the vehicle, the tire went through a fence and into another parking lot, which is used by Hertz to store rental vehicles. Hertz employees told CBS News Bay Area off camera that none of them saw or heard the impact.
Officials said the runway was briefly closed to clear debris.
There are no reports of injuries either at the San Francisco Internatinoal Airport or on the airplane.

United Flight 35 landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport around 1:20 p.m. The flight was bound for Osaka, Japan and had a total of 249 people on board.

"The 777-200 has six tires on each of its two main landing gear struts. The aircraft is designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires," said a United Airlines spokesperson.

The airline said it is arranging a new aircraft for the affected passengers. It was not immediately known when the passengers would continue their journey to Japan.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said the incident is under investigation.

Thankfully no one got hurt, but someone was in a car 2 spots over from the impact.

What do you think CE?

Unless its a new plane that United just bought, the blame for this probably falls on United for not doing proper maintenance.

Seems more like a problem with the airline maintenance this time...

But ya, I already knew Boeings should be avoided before Oliver's special.

if person was in the driver seat probably be fine. not so much in the back.

traumatized for life. then again maybe it was maintenance that has cut corners like others say.

Even if not physically injured that could cause some serious PSTD. Imagine sitting there chilling and suddenly all your windows explode as the car bounces like a low rider.

The entire aerospace industry has a looooooot of problems. Most of it is that aerospace required a metric ton of paperwork: Pretty much anything on an aircraft had to be traceable from the mill that makes the raw material all the way through to the final component, and inspection reports for dimensions and processing. The more features and processing there is on a part, the more paperwork there is. And paperwork takes a lot of time to do properly. Theres a reason a bolt put on an aircraft is multiple times more expensive than the same bolt you buy at a hardware store, and paperwork is why. The constant refrain I always fall back on is that aerospace companies sell paperwork, not parts.

Now, the paperwork is not the problem! That paperwork is so that if something goes wrong with anything investigators can go back and find what all had happened to the part that failed every step of the way and determine what sort of containment actions are needed. The problem is higher ups, in both large companies and small-time manufacturers, dont want to take the time to do the paperwork properly, or even make the parts properly sometimes.

And a ton of this is further exacerbated by Just In Time Delivery. It costs money to have parts in storage, both just from the standpoint of you spent the money on material and labor on a part thats not being sold, and theres insurance costs on your inventory and thats more expensive for finished parts over raw material. So the industry as a whole has shifted heavily to wanting parts delivered right when the assembly line needs it. But that makes any production delays, anywhere along the chain, result in delays at the aircraft itself. So theres pressure all the way down when any production delays happen at all, which leads to rushed parts, and just overall its a total mess.

So yeah, this isnt just Boeing. Theyre just the sloppiest at this point, by far.

Source: I work in aerospace manufacturing as a manufacturing engineer, my entire job is making sure we have the processes and tools in place to make our parts and determine if non-conformances discovered are acceptable or unacceptable. So right on the ass-end of the chain for the most part.

car manufacturing requires that exact same paper trail. the airlines problem is just not wanting to pay the people to handle it because they haven't been sued enough yet

Im pretty sure airlines have made the same calculation that Ford made with the Pinto: Lawsuit payouts are less expensive than actually implemeting the correct processes and procedures. And given our joke of a justice system, theyre right.
