Liver cancer from Agent Orange exposure. He was a very cool guy. Lost an eye to a grenade and got a purple heart for it.

He was always proud of his service, but I feel like he gave so much for nothing. It was his life after the military that really mattered.

Same with my grandad. He had other health issues. Had liver cancer and was told it wasn't actually his beer consumption that caused it. Rather he ate Tylenol like candy. But agent orange definitely played a factor.

He was given two purple hearts but he denied both as he felt he shouldn't be rewarded for getting hurt. He did get a bronze star though

That's my opinion that so many servicemen give so much for so little & waste their life serving a country that doesn't help them out of the conflict. Was he drafted?

He was. He always felt like the opposite of my dad. A physical extroverted guy who went to war. My dad was an intellectual hippy who draft dodged.

Same thing just happened to my brother in law's dad. He'd been wheelchair bound since the war.

Damn.

It's horrible how wars can still claim casualties decades after they've ended. Losing an eye too is pretty rough in and of itself.

Rest in peace to your badass uncle. He more than earned his right to be proud of his service. It's a pity that a nation's heroes aren't given more upon their return.

Well it's the politicians that sent them to fight an unsustainable and winnable war, only for the Vietnamese to becoming a manufacturing hub of cheap goods for the US market decades later.

As someone who has was born in 1976, it will never cease to piss me off how much The US swept Vietnam under the rug. And make no mistake about it, it did lead to the mess we are in now as a Nation and a Community.
