Like, you finish it, and then what? It's not like you could return to it, so how is that your money's worth?

I could play fighting games over and over again, NHL series, and so forth. However, as soon as the story is finished and you completed everything to 100%, the game will start gathering dust, as there is nothing left to do.

Doesn't it feel like a waste of money to you? Please explain this to me.

If the experience is good enough than I don't feel my money wasted. The only time I dislike a game is when it feels like a chore to play rather than being something fun to play.

It's fine if you only want to play videogames that have lots of / infinite replay value, but if a game costs 10 to 15 bucks and gives me 2 or 3 hours of entertainment that's no different from seeing a movie or reading a (short) novel. As long as the experience was good I don't consider it a waste

I feel the same way for the most part TC, I'm not that interested in following a traditional narrative story in a game. I'm more into game mechanics, stats, developing a character or party, exploring, etc...

No one talks about how restraining a game experience to tell a linear, detailed story from a very fixed protagonist POV - as the director and developer intends often makes me feel like I'm going through motions to tick boxes as story elements are revealed. In a more open ended game I feel like I'm really engaging with the software and pushing up against it.

But I think it's fine that others like narrative heavy games. I came to terms with friends who liked sports games early on as a kid. Not that I hate sports, I just wasn't much into them and found sports video an extra layer of boring... but then I see how people might think the same thing about a deep, slow, turn based SRPG like XCom or Disgaea.

Funny you should mention this. I recently played and finished Doki Doki Literature Club. Didn't quite 100% it, but close enough for me to have a sense of completion.

It most definitely did not feel like a waste of money to me, because:
  • I got it for free.
  • The storytelling turned out to be very very good, much better than I had expected (to the point where in hindsight I would've paid money for it).
  • There are some very serious and heavy storytelling elements which give some insight in how people can experience certain things, and at the very least I feel it has made me somewhat more considerate of other people's thoughts and feelings, which makes having played it feel all the more rewarding.

As for replay value, there are quite a few mods out there for this game which explore all kinds of scenarios, some of which I most definitely intend to try out.

but why? NHL rinks never change shape. the players always go in the same direction, do the same things over and over a million times. sometimes they make it, sometimes they don't.

fighting games literally have the same move list over and over. you use them at the exact same times. you learn the same methods. you do the same thing over and over and over again. sometimes you try harder, sometimes you don't try as hard. how is it not boring? it seems like it gets old quickly.

i love point n click adventure games. completed close to 100 of them the past 2 years. idr majority of their stories tbh lol. i just like clicking on shit mainly and sometimes the puzzles are really neat and i feel satisfied not having used a guide for them.

the only action game i go back to and play frequently is DMC 3 se ubisoft port. currently working on some launch sequences on DT'ed lusts.

A story can have an impact on you that lasts forever. Theres also things like the music, the characters etc that can have a lasting impact on you long after youve finished playing the game.

A game doesnt need to be infinitely replayable to be worth my time or money.

Yeah, that's pretty odd, my guy.

Like if it was a game that was only story, I'd understand, but games like Fallout/Elder Scrolls (which have a story) have far more play in them than sport's or fighting games. Nothing inherently against those genres, they just seem to get repetitive after awhile.

As others have asked, do you also not like reading or watching anything? Do you just play sports all the time?

Yeah this is especially odd considering how common it is to go back and rewatxh a movie or reread a novel that you really like. If it's a good story, yes, you can obviously go back and enjoy it again.

And then it's even odder when TC is not talking about "walking simulator" games where you just progress the narrative with little interactivity, but rather games like FF7 and Fallout where there is tons of gameplay content besides the story for you to enjoy. To the point where many people who enjoy them don't even pay attention to the story.

It sounds like TC is into honing skills and feeling accomplishment out of beating difficult challenges and getting better. There's a good chance that they also like competing with other people based on the genres those games are in.

Which is fine. If you know what you enjoy, good for you. Keep doing it.

But other people like different things.

I used to be an avid reader and I liked going back to books I read every so often. I consider story driven games much the same. Just cause I finished it doesn't mean I won't want to replay it.

To me, fighting games seem more repetitive. Once you learn the characters, I feel like there's not much to go from there unless you want to go pro and that's just a whole other can of worms.

My depression doesn't really affect my experience. It affects me bothering in the first place but when I do bother, I don't consider it anymore of a waste than anything else in this sorry world. It's all the same in the end so just do whatever

I mostly only play story based games, because I like them to definitively end. And most are 30 to 60 hours, so I feel I get my money's worth. And games like Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Tears of the Kingdom, and Baldur's Gate 3 went north of 100 hours.

Short story driven games like the REmakes have good replay value imo. Longer ones like open world I tend to play for over 100 hours so one playthrough is enough to justify the price.

Tbh games that only focus on gameplay often have better longevity, but a good story can really stay with you.

There's a reason ff6 is more beloved than 5, despite 5 having the job system, better bosses and better dungeons.

Likewise there's a reason Pokemon Mystery Dungeon explores has a much bigger fandom than Super Mystery Dungeon, even with the later being obstenially more advance (though I dont think the story of SMD was terrible)

I remember reading something once that Said people who spend money on events/experiences i.e. concerts are happier on average than people who mostly just buy material things. But I get it. If you don't have disposable income to throw around you'd rather get something that's gonna last longer

Anyways a game with a story can be great red dead redemption 2 was damn good and so are most metal gear solid games.

I've mostly played fighters these past many years though cause I fell into alcoholism and story based games just ain't for me if I'm drinking. I'll wake up the next day and have forgotten story beats. I eventually learned some control though play for about an hour into my drinking then switch to something without much story.
