For instance, say a Japanese game stars a white character, who's made black for the western release.

I'm assuming this is a thing, right? That's what gets gamers today all pissed off.

i mostly ignore stupid gamer culture war shit because most of the people I've seen who discuss it all the time seem like they just hate video games altogether and are deeply miserable (or are influencers that grift for cash on it)

if a new release is somehow ruined by localization there's a million options for me to play another game I haven't cracked open in a while or one I wanted to play anyways. Why treat it like the apocalypse, etc etc.

If the setting was changed from Japan to say the US then if someone complains about a black actor cast but not the setting itself then theyre racist. Theyre just mad theyre seeing a black person. Thats what was going on with Netflix death note for example.

It's so annoying when you rescue the princess in the final dungeon only to have her sleep with the Black archer on your wedding night. Why do western studios keep doing this? I can't afford to import the Japanese version all of the time.

I thought this refers to when the translators don't do a 1:1 translation

One thing worth noting is that sometimes you get race changes or whatever in casting and the show/movie ends up being bad, but it's due to the writing and often has nothing to do with the race swapping in the casting. So even when you get people up in arms about it, they are just dead-in focused on race and not the actual problems with the adaptation. Basically happened with live action Bebop, as if Faye wearing skimpier clothes or Jet being white would've somehow mended it.

At the end of the day it's usually bigots that don't like art/gaming beyond their nostalgia and they'll happily eat slop if the thing conforms to solely the visual components and get cranky if it's changed on the most shallow level. It's just worth ignoring entirely since the industry rightfully refuses to engage with them since they're loser freaks

Well no that likely wouldn't happen if it's a Japanese game. The character isn't even white unless it's fantasy setting, the character is Japanese.

Anyway it only bothers me if they censor things that didn't really need to be censored or if they do dumb shit like translate rice balls as jelly filled donuts.

Thats called black/white washing, which doesn't really matter unless you're dealing with older, well known and established character's/IPs.

e.g. James Bond, Peter Parker, Bruce wayne, or etc.
