Its a term for vulnerable and marginalized minorities, particularly black and LGBT+ people. Rest in Power is about solidarity and a call to keep fighting against injustice towards our communities.

Also Rest in Power is not an example of AAVE

One of the things I hate about being a leftist is the sheer amount of bitching about each other that different factions of the left will do. Like there are more important things to do than fight about this sort of shit.

When the fascists are crushed, LGBTQ people are safe, healthcare and housing crisises are solved, and the means of production rest safely in the hands of the workers, then we can worry about who gets to fucking use rest in power. Until then, shut the fuck up.

When people do this shit it just screams "my leftism is entirely performative".

It's no sweat off my back if people want to say "Rest in Power" for Aaron Bushnell, considering the context surrounding his death.

Taking offense could be more justified or understandable if this were a different context, like if he was some random white guy killed by the police in a traffic stop. One of this tweets admittedly says they "make an exception" for Mike Dream because he was part of what they considered to be black culture.

Real people having real discussions on a public forum about real events is pretty real, IMO. Just because the internet is the medium used for communication doesn't make it "not real life," like for example people in an online video game arguing about video game stuff, or some other RP context, where the "IRL" distinction makes more sense.

Ngl I'm pretty sure I saw hardcore kids use "rest in power" online before I saw any other group use it. It originated within the Latino community tho so us Latinos win again viva la raza

Now, White Lives Matter and All Lives Matter in response to BLM is a clear case of appropriation of the black community and racism.

I've seen the phrase used for almost a decade, almost always in the context of a rock/metal musician dying.
