In 2021, Sony announced it was working on a next-generation headset it described as a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. Roughly a year later, PlayStation VR2 was officially revealed, with a release date set for February 2023.
Fast-forward to just over a year after its release, and the PSVR2 has not achieved its full potential. Between its lack of first-party exclusives, steep price, lack of backward compatibility, and retail delays, the PSVR2 has barely made a ripple in the VR market.
Now, amid devastating layoffs that include the closure of the VR-focused PlayStation London, it seems like PSVR2 may already be on its last legs.

I still don't think the technology is ready for VR to become mainstream. I've tried 4 different headsets and found them all bulky and uncomfortable and visually vastly inferior to a good TV. Even a shitty TV. Not to mention the price and motion sickness.

It's incredible on VR. If there was any reason to get one, it was that. I never got a steering wheel, but VR + that was essentially the "Steel Battalion" of PS5.

I own a PSVR and making this not BC + the price made it a wait and see how they support it for me

VR rules when its done right but the high cost barrier for entry, and the fact that most demos of it are just gimmick games make it tough to convince people

Considering that it cost as much as a new console, and that other than an extremely small number of actual good games that aren't just glorified tech demos, is anyone really surprised?

Slash the price in half or even cheaper, make some actual killer apps that make you want to buy it, and the thing might actually sell well. I'd try it.

Like, I wouldn't mind playing that Horizon game, but not for 600 dollars.

Yeah, I have a PSVR2, and it's awesome. The problem is the fact that it's way too expensive. VR is basically the progression of stuff like the Wii and Kinect, which has an inherently casual playerbase. So when a casual gaming device costs more than the actual system, that's not going to be an easy sell for most owners.

VR will NEVER be more than a niche product. It is not the tactile experience we have all grown up with. Perhaps when AR/VR is around us all day, every day, which I don't think it will be, it may have a chance but until then, just no.

It's selling like hotcakes apparently.

Anyways, I was considering getting a PSVR2 so I could still play while the TV was being used by somebody else. The Playstation Portal though solved that problem far more cost effectively.

Now I'm still considering a PSVR2 but specifically waiting on PC support and what that will end up looking like because in the world of VR headsets the PSVR2 is pretty much the most bang for your buck option and by a pretty wide margin as I understand it. However I really need to see how the PC support works.
