.... like terrible attitude or maybe incompetent and most of the managers below them thought he was pretty terrible etc... and many of the non managers wanted him gone but none of you had the authority to get rid of him? Has this ever happened at your work?

Ive had a boss that was very technically competent and a great network engineer and general problem solver, but not a good manager.

The VP at the lab I used to work at. Guy was one of those, "the client is always right" types so when it came to testing he'd pressure us to get results that were positive for the client even if it meant fabricating numbers. This was for a lab that did testing for construction sites btw.....

Absolutely. The store manager here is running the place into the ground, and the district manager that hired him was fired on the spot when a company VP visited and saw the state of the store. Unfortunately the store manager was "too new" in the position to get the same treatment. That was 8 months ago and the place is still getting worse.

As I mentioned in another topic, I was a whistleblower once for a leadership team like that. They were all fired.

Similar. The district manager was knows for exclusively hiring Walmart management failures so it's slowly becoming a Walmart clone. It will take years to reverse the trend if they ever can, since the Walmart dregs tend to scapegoat the preexisting management whenever things go wrong.

Edit: The prior store manager was hired from Lowes where something similar happened. The district manager walked into the store and fired every single manager on the spot. Prior to him was the guy that worked 17 consecutive 12+ hour days during Covid and dropped dead.

There's been at least 1 at nearly every job I've ever had, yes.

One of them was the owner. Complete asshole who regularly screamed at employees in front of everyone for things everybody knew either weren't the person's fault or weren't wrong in the first place. But nobody had the balls to say or do anything about it. I put up with it for about a year and a half because I wasn't usually the target of his rage, but eventually even I'd had enough and quit. Ran into one of my coworkers randomly a couple months later and learned my leaving had opened the floodgates and nearly half the staff had followed me out the door since. Last I heard the business was barely staying afloat. Serves the prick right.

Don't even get me started on my boss for my last 3 years at the university. The best I can say there is that I got out alive. Two full professors were not so lucky; one of them attended his (forced) retirement party then went out to his car to enjoy a bottle of champagne and cyanide. The other lasted a year or so after being forcibly retired before ending it.

isn't that kinda unusual , fired every single manager on the spot? You agreed with it though? That's some story about that what happened to that guy 17 consecutive days , he was kinda old right?

I wasn't there for the every manager fired on the spot incident, just that the store manager who was in charge of the Lowes it happened at was hired as as our store manager after being fired from Lowes. Given his performance at our store, I'd say the Lowes mass firing was probably justified. Last I heard he had left retail management entirely as was working part time as a substitute teacher.

With the current crop of managers at our store, I'd say a mass firing of every member of management who hasn't been with the company for at least five years (meaning predating that district manager) would be entirely justified and probably long overdue. There might be one or two worthwhile people caught up in that but for the most part the best I can say about them is they're a waste of headcount and the majority are actively detrimental to everyone around them.

The manager who died was in his mid 50s but overweight and obviously heavily stressed.

I plead the Fifth, for the same reason I don't say exactly which city I live in or which university I went to. There are some users here who have explicitly said they would like to doxx me if given the chance.

yeah i kinda understand you. In real life have told some people before some stuff, like a potential friend, and they then used it against me. Have seen it on this site. They use it to harm you...etc... Pretty awful. But not sure they could dox you though if you told what retail chain it was though, but i do kinda understand...etc...

When I was a DQ manager the owners were terrible. Especially the wife. She would brag about cheating on her husband, and when we had this black kid working there she would always refer to him by the J word (if you've seen Police Academy you know the word). The guy wasn't any better. One time this lady he knew wrote bad checks wanted to write one and he standing right there could've told her no but he stayed silent and let me take it and penalized me for it after. Another time money was missing out of the safe. I didn't have the combination to the safe, but his son did and had been in and out of the office. He refused to believe it and said his 17 year old son didn't have any use for money.
