The shooting mechanics are good the enemies take cover well. The levling up feels good. The story is really lame and the world doesn't feel like a believable place that people would exist in like say New Vegas.
Companions are far better than they where in fallout 3.

I hated the settlement building but other people really enjoyed it so whatever.

I don't recall a single interesting quest. Except maybe the pirate robots.

Visually it's incredible. Game had a lot of potential. But Bethesda went too big for their own good. Seems to be a trend.

I'm sure the modding scene is cool.

Matter of fact I have yet to see a fallout with an interesting story. This board has a love boner for NV so I'm sure someone will throw that out there but the story for it sucked too

It's a decent open world WRPG with good gameplay, a variety of things to do and vast map. The downside is a boring story, pointless dialog system and a uninteresting map to explore.

Really depends on what your expecting. If you haven't played the other games in the series you may enjoy it.

Apart from 'Last Voyage of the USS Constitution' (which I agree is the game's standout sidequest), I had a lot of fun with 'The Silver Shroud.' For as much as people praised FO3's 'The Superhuman Gambit' quest, it was way more fun being the looney wannabe superhero than just dealing with them.

'Confidence Man' is another good one; more involved than your standard 'go to place kill guys' quest, and changing the game's radio DJ's personality by boosting his self-esteem is a neat mechanic (even if Nervous Travis is vastly superior to Confident Travis entertainment-wise).

I'm also personally fond of Curie's questline. The Vaults in FO4 suuuuuuuuuck on average, but Vault 81 is at least half-decent.

EDIT And of course how could we forget the sheer brilliance of Bethesda's masterwork 'Kid in a Fridge?'

I thought it just made the whole thing even funnier, since it was supposed to be a silly, over-the-top quest. The fact that you couldn't stay in the Silver Shroud persona the rest of the game was a real letdown.

Sounds like yet another instance where the female MC VA is superior to the male: she brings just the right amount of tryhard goofiness. And like I've said in past topics, one of my favorite things to do is punk Sinjin's lackeys into running away scared by having her calmly say in her normal voice 'I'm going to wipe out every last person who points a gun at me' after talking like a cartoon character for the entire rest of the quest.

Yeah, that would've been nice. They at least throw you a few bones here and there; if you're wearing the outfit you can speak as the Shroud when confronting the Mechanist at the end of the Automatron questline. There's also a random encounter with a dude who thinks he's Manta-Man, and you can greet him as the Shroud as well (too bad FO4's random encounters are terribly unreliable).

People like to hate on it because it's the cool thing to do, and it's the most recent Fallout that wasn't a MMO. We saw the same thing with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which wasn't as good as Vice City... until IV came out, at which point they hated IV and suddenly San Andreas was the best GTA. Skyrim was crap compared to Morrowind, but I suspect when TES VI gets here suddenly Skyrim will be the pinnacle of The Elder Scrolls.

I put like 313 hours in Fallout 4, into one character.

This. Speaking as a NV fanboy, if you're looking for an addictive survival-crafting-exploration shooter with Fallout trappings and Bethesda sandbox shenanigans, it's not hard to see FO4 being someone's favorite.

No, people hate on it cause it is a VERY flawed product that is the culmination of Bethesda dumbing things down to an absurd degree. Seems like the game would be good if you liked the settlement building. I didn't, so a portion of the game was wasted on me. I also disliked the voiced protagonist and lack of role playing present. Also, the wandering is annoying because a large chunk of the map is the city and it is far too dense to have an enjoyable time exploring.

I really liked Fallout 4. But I also played more recently and enjoyed it for what it was. I notice the people that hate on it the most had a very specific expectation for the game. And when it didnt hit that they wrote it off as horrible. Thats their prerogative but that group became a vocal minority.

Is it the best game? No. Its still Bethesda and has flaws. But the game has good systems and mechanics that make parts of it fun.

I couldnt get into 3 or New Vegas after tons of tries too. Im pretty sure I just dont like that game play engine for some reason.

Most of them won't admit it, but too many people went into Fallout 4 expecting it to hold a candle to New Vegas. My expectations were a little more realistic: in my book, all it had to do was improve upon the aspects of Fallout 3 that pissed me off the most, and make settlement-building fun; for my tastes, it succeeded on both fronts (not every change they made was a good one obviously, but contrary to the usual Bethesda MO, they actually took more steps forward overall than they took steps back).

Is it so hard to believe? I can't say I played the original 2, but my ranking of the rest of the series is Fallout 4 > Fallout 3 > New Vegas > 76

I really don't get why people on the internet love New Vegas so much, imo it has the worst story by far, and the most boring setting. The game is still fun but it is more of a 7/10 compared to Fallout 4 being a 10/10

Imo, no.
It suffered from the same mechanical changes as Skyrim. They streamlined a lot of it, and you end up encountering mostly the same few enemy types. Because of pathing and clipping issues, dumb things like bloatbugs ended up being deadlier than Deathclaws.

There isn't a lot of roleplaying, your skills don't factor into questing/dialogue as much as it did in FO3 or New Vegas, a lot of the quests are repetitive, it is difficult at times to discern when a mission is a radiant mission or not.

Outpost building was a wasted mechanic, really just serves to glitch the economy for unlimited bottle caps.

A lot of it just feels lazy and incomplete. Like the town of Salem which has *really* interesting history in real life. They recreated some of the historical sites so well in Fallout 4, then... just left it mostly empty with a couple of throwaway forgettable missions.

The pacing of the story was a complete wash - they put so much time into pointless radiant missions that if you end up following the main story you get through the whole thing pretty quickly and any shocking revelatory moments are quashed instantly.

The whole base game just felt like a second job to me tbh. There's an expansion pack (Far Harbor? Or something like that) that actually had more traditional Fallout writing with interesting gameplay choices, but it was short. I just wish the whole game had been like that.

Finally, my biggest personal gripe was a glitch with the stealth system. No matter what, every time I sniped someone with a silenced weapon, everything immediately detected me. I would be trying to snipe a group of supermutants from across town and I'd get a kill and then have a handful of mininukes raining down on me with pinpoint precision. Just ruined that for me.

FO4 is enjoyable on many levels, but the main questline is middling and the dialogue system is vastly inferior to New Vegas, so everything suffers immensely. If you just want to shoot ghouls in the face, loot stuff, build settlements, etc., then it's fine. There's just the thought in the back of the head that (correctly) asks, "shouldn't this be much better than it is?"

The Far Harbor and Nuka-World DLCs have some decent stuff to 'em, though. If those stories had been swapped for the main questline and given an extra 1-2 years to develop, that would've been something to see, haha. (Wishful thinking like this doesn't make much sense given the main storyline, but no one really cares about finding their infant when you could become a water magnate, right? Right?)

If you're going to get it, just get it on sale for $10 or so. It works pretty well on Steam Deck, too.
