I never had it as a kid but I love Paper Mario and the handheld RPG series, so I assume I'll probably enjoy this. Switch remaster of course.

The cutscenes are truly gorgeous. Now that's what the Switch can do. I'm only like 30 minutes in but I'm also surprised that there's so much humor already. I'm finding it vaguely difficult to aim Mario's jump in the Overworld. How the fuck is Mallow a frog? He already won me over though.

Yeah Mallow being a frog is weird as fuck. He cant even jump

Mallow will make more sense once you get further in the game.

I've gotten the attack one down pretty good and the defense one decently already.

After playing the game for the first time last year, its crazy how Geno has such an incredible fanbase to get into Smash but no one wants Mallow, I think the fans got it backwards

A cool design goes a long way. Plus, Geno is considered to be one of the best party members as far as gameplay. Mallow is obviously the more interesting character.

I'm genuinely excited to meet Geno to see if he lives up to the hype of his fanbase. Mallow seems pretty funny already. I'm glad that the Mario RPG series having great writing was a thing since the beginning.

He probably wont. He barely talks in this game. He just has really cool specials

Also, wtf at there being captions but no voice acting. Come on Nintendo.

I like how Mario is so animated. He has quite strong characterization as opposed to a lot of the mainline platformers. I knew the music was supposed to be great and I agree it's already banging. I also like the variety of enemies I've never seen in the mario universe before.

If I had to guess I'd say it stems from Geno having a more interesting design and being a more effective party member combat-wise. But yeah, Mallow's definitely a better / more entertaining character.

Yeah Mario having to pantomime everything cause he cant talk is definitely a highlight of the game for me

When he first turned into Bowser I thought it was a reveal that Bowser was disguised as him lol.

I only just realized you can equip things for all party members. Also I'm truly shocked that Geno isn't really Geno.

Super Mario RPG was the first RPG I actually liked (before it, I had played Zelda 2 -- yes that's an RPG -- and Dragon Warrior, and neither seemed that great). Up to that point I was mostly a Mario/Zelda/Mega Man player, didn't think RPGs were for me. Super Mario RPG was the perfect springboard into that genre for me and then w/ Suikoden and Chrono Trigger it became my favorite genre.

That's what I've said for like 2 decades now.
Mallow is a much better character AND would have a more interesting move set for Smash.
I don't hate Geno, he's ok and all, but never understood how much more popular he was than Mallow.

I agree Mallow is cute and funny. Geno is alright so far and his design is certainly cooler. It's interesting that the game is pretty short. I just got the 4th star with no challenge at all!

That's one thing I love about Super Mario RPG. It's only like 15-20 hours long, but the pacing is great. It really feels like there isn't any filler nor grinding in the game. It just keeps moving from one setpiece to another and then ends before it overstays its welcome

Yeah even the other great Mario RPGs don't manage to totally avoid those moments like SMRPG does. Really doesn't have any low point throughout the whole story.

Wtf, Geno did a move that did 9999 damage. Is that like some 1% chance or something? Also are the increase fp items temporary? I would think so.

I think you have to time the hit just right, but yes it has an extremely narrow window to do 9999 damage.
Most of the time it will do less damage than other specials that cost the same FP or less.

And the FP items are permanent increases. Apply immediately, not just for the boost but to free up inventory space (unless the remake gives you more space? it was easy to get full in the original)

Nope, Geno Whirl does 9999 damage all the time if you time it right, except against enemies that specifically resist it.

And for the FP items, do you mean Flower Tabs/Jars etc?

If you time geno whirl right it always does 9999 damage. Obviously not to bosses except Exor.

Does Geno Whirl actually have difficult timing in the new one?
Because I played this last year on Wii Virtual Console and the timing was really easy. OP move.

I only got the timing once, but I think it's when the disc leaves his hand in the remake? In OG it was when it leaves the screen

Hell I wouldn't even say it's 15 - 20 hours. I'm at 9 hours and almost done, and this was me taking my SWEET time (but I also played it to death a lot so who knows).

Probably 15 hours to do everything in it I would say. But that's its charm: it is a quick play that you can play over and over again and still enjoy it.

Oh yeah, if you played it before and know where everything is, you can easily hit 10 hours at the end of the game

The interactions between everyone is so charming, particularly with Bowser as a face. Jinx is also cute.

You get one of the best accessories in the game from beating Jynx fyi

He's in Yoshi's Island (which you can unlock by going through the Pipe Vault). You just feed the baby Yoshi that hatched like 30ish cookies, and he'll become a fat FUCK Boogie2988 Yoshi next time you visit the area.

You can then give him cookies for random stat buff items or Red Essences

Wtf, the Valentina fight is so hard. Also thought peek is such a funny concept.

There are rewards for certain numbers of super jumps in a row. Last reward is 100 in a row.

I made the mistake of leaving trying to get 100 until the post-game. Got like ~90 once.

I'd suggest trying throughout the game if you want to do it, it gets tedious otherwise.

There's only 2 rewards: for 30 and for 100. The 30 gives you Mario's best accessory, 100 gives you the best universal armor in the game.

Dont worry about either one too much >_> 30 is difficult enough but 100 is so fucking hard and not worth it.

Yeah that's too intimidating. I've only gotten 13. The Mario Odyssey jump rope challenge was a nightmare for me.

Man I can't even get 30. I assume there's some optimal strategy? Look at the shadow maybe? And maybe there's a specific enemy?

It took playing Super Mario RPG on the Switch for me to realize I never knew what Geno's face looked like. I always thought he had this huge grin on his face as a kid, but thanks to the HD graphics, I realized that was part of his hood. >_>

Yeah I've been doing it in simple battles where I can kill them easily anyway.

Anyway, I love the design of The Dodo.

I've gotten up to 22 jumps. The power ranger guys are pretty interesting. I'm also getting pissed because I can't do the Yoshi race.
