eBay only gets a fraction of each item sold, Amazon gets much more, but their Prime service, cloud service, music and book services all contribute to what they make.
I think I even read their Cloud service makes more than what they do off of selling stuff years ago.

Ebay literally has thousands of auctions end a minute, every minute they get a cut from, its crazy to think about that

For sure. I only buy something from accounts that have extremely high feedback ratings, and even then I feel a bit worried unless the feedback amount is also very high. Back in the old days ebay was known for people ripping others off, and it is still trying to shake that stigma.

To be fair I'd say there's almost as much new stuff on ebay from resellers than old, if not more.

Amazon is used primarily as an online retailer. Ebay is better for used and oddball items.

What is this? eBay gets a much smaller fraction of each item sold? Why though ? Had never heard

Because ebay doesn't sell anything firsthand at all. Everything sold is by a user. Amazon sells things firsthand, and even has a system where you can set up a user run "storefront" and still sell items that Amazon themselves fulfill.

Some of it had to do with if there was an issue with your purchase it was mostly up to you and the seller to hash it out but on Amazon you dealt with them if there was a problem. Also it was a wild crapshoot when youd actually get what you paid for on Ebay vs Amazon you had a good general idea when it would show up. Lastly Amazon giving credit or gift cards for bad service that could be used for other purchases was a powerful incentive. Especially over just leaving Sammy Stealer a bad review and hope no one does business with them.

it's because of interacting with the seller as opposed to a company. if i just had to deal with ebay and ebay did everything for me, and i spoke to ebay, and i didn't have to haggle with ebay, then it would be nice. but they wanted this "realistic experience" where direct communication between a buyer and a seller was encouraged, and that's where a majority of the problem lies.

amazon has sellers too but it never gives off the impression that i have to deal with the seller alone and amazon "just has my back". there's the perception that amazon is basically facilitating everything and i'm just pressing a simple button.

Having to bid, having to deal with sellers who may or may not take returns, items may or may not be in then condition described or you may have a different opinion on the condition, having to worry about getting scammed ("you're bidding on the empty Playstation box, not the Playstation itself") etc.

Ebay looks just like a big yard sale now. I remember I got my first saxophone there. And it was from a Chinese Store. So they always had direct buying. But the draw was the bidding. And not the shops. And more people wanted the shops so it would seem. And Amazon just bets them in the shop department hands down. Why fight to bid for something when I can just it cheaper version from Amazon.

When it comes to new stuff Amazon is usually cheaper unless it's 'open box' or something no one's really buying. I've been buying and selling on ebay for over 20 years and rarely buy anything on there unless it's a discontinued item.

Ebay has its uses but Amazon has a lot of stuff for much cheaper than ebay. The cheap stuff on ebay is usually stuff Amazon just doesn't bother selling or they upcharge it for a reason.

I just made all of that up though.
