  • Your phone was a tool for communication and not a life stealing device
  • You were probably in your early 20s and still figured were gonna make it big with 0 effort
  • You and everyone you know had their own lives to live rather than living whatever-the-opposite-of-cathartically-is through the misery of others by being terminally online
  • It was possible for a movie like American Pie to be made and that was considered funny
  • Politics wasn't something you had any interest in
  • Bush was the measure of an immeasurably embarrassing politician
  • You had a more innocent perspective on media, like you never even thought about whether a silly superhero movie had to cater to specific social causes
  • No one ever challenged you on the above thought even if they were right to do so
  • Lord of the Rings
Simpler times

  • People were still very much fixated on cell phones and other gadgets and cable television was very much "life stealing" for a lot of people
  • I was in my middle school years being incessantly bullied and belittled at home and in school
  • People were still very much all about trying to emulate people/things they weren't and not being an individual
  • Less than a year ago they released a movie literally about a thirtysomething Jennifer Lawrence being paid to seduce a 19 year old boy who behaved like an awkward middle school student
  • Post-9/11 paranoia and the 24-hour news cycle was still very much a thing and people on both sides were vocal about a number of topics
  • Nobody gave a fuck because there was a lot more creative diversity in media and tons of different ideas being tried out as opposed to superhero movies, biopics and media adaptations
  • There's like a billion different fleshed-out fantasy franchises today

No thanks, I'm happy with my current life. And I feel like you're overestimating how old some of us are. I didn't turn 20 until 2009. So the early 2000's were middle school and high school for me.

I was a child. I mean, I would be able to make some different decisions and hopefully have a better life.
I did care about politics at that age, but only as much as the average preteen did back then.

it sounds like all of those problems could be solved by uninstalling apps on your phone so that it's just a phone, and not using the internet as much.

The saying goes that a millennial's favorite period is the time between the turn of the century and 9/11.

* People were still very much fixated on cell phones and other gadgets and cable television was very much "life stealing" for a lot of people

Not nearly as much as we are now.

* I was in my middle school years being incessantly bullied and belittled at home and in school.

That's an individual issue.

* People were still very much all about trying to emulate people/things they weren't and not being an individual

This I agree with. There's always been a hive mind.

* Less than a year ago they released a movie literally about a thirtysomething Jennifer Lawrence being paid to seduce a 19 year old boy who behaved like an awkward middle school student.

And it went largely unseen, whereas American Pie is a movie still talked about today. Plus. it was a bout a girl manipulating a guy, and we're ok with that.

* Post-9/11 paranoia and the 24-hour news cycle was still very much a thing and people on both sides were vocal about a number of topics.

But not to the level they are now. Not even remotely close.

* Nobody gave a fuck because there was a lot more creative diversity in media and tons of different ideas being tried out as opposed to superhero movies, biopics and media adaptations.

Again. Agreed.

* There's like a billion different fleshed-out fantasy franchises today

And very few, if any, hit the level that Lord of The Rings did. Maybe Game of Thrones.

I was trying to make a joke about how millennials as an entire generation seem to be characterized by depression but without glorifying it. The joke started I havent felt serotonin since, and I had to pause to think of something. I was expecting to choose some dated, nostalgia item but then the memory of 9/11 dawned on me and I knew that was the answer.
