They purposefully make them non-sexy so girls would not feel intimidated playing with them.

A lot of the guys in games are also remarkably plain so they can be self-inserted. And the Create-A-Player Function of course is the most popular.

I do see it as an older gamer. Not a lot of Lara Crofts going around

yes and no.
with older games, the graphics weren't as good so a lot was left to imagination.

with newer games, the graphics are much higher fidelity, and not much is left to the imagination anymore. And even though characters, their facial expressions, animations, etc. look a lot more realistic, they're still in borderline uncanny valley territory so even an attractive character might look unappealing to a lot of people.

There are sometimes less attractive women, as opposed to always having very attractive women, unless it's a wacky-enough anime game where the characters are too abstract to really have that sort of appeal.

It's overblown. Of course, so is the reaction to the initial overblown reaction. You don't have to pretend like Alloy is this beacon of some moral conflict of vidya.

Some people will deny it, but its true. I dont want to make a big deal out of it, but thats how it is. Saying it is not happening is also kind of bad. It undermines the concept of body acceptance and embracing people regardless of their appearance. Yes these characters are not the Super models that they use to be, and guess what that is okay.

I find it easy to be immersed in any storytelling so long as its good. Realism has nothing to do with it, only writing quality.

It's less tits on tits-established characters and uglier-than average faces on new characters.

But like, we still get plenty of tits and ass stuff. There's no real industry attack on T&A. It's mostly people dramatically complaining, and then people dramatically countercomplaining.

Oh. In that case, my comment still works with faces. It's just like watching 4k pr0n, having too much detail/graphics starts to show imperfections. While Japanese games tend to have smoother, less realistic skin.
Western games are just too realistic lately, for all parts of the anatomy imo.

Face scanning and motion capture has definitely led to some models that veer on the uncanny valley. There are definitely studios that put less emphasis on conventional attractiveness, which is fine, but it can have very mixed results when paired with the scanning issue.

Besides reasons given for lack of concern, it's also a double standard to have that default beauty if say a guy wants to be accepted for his personality over appearance. Even then that kind of entitlement is also unseemly.
