I never liked this about The Office either. Jim is the worst type of dude and for some reason people love him.

Yeah, I was just thinking about all the shitty stuff he did.

Pam in one early episode described her perfect house / living situation then got kind of emotional thinking about how she would never have that with Roy.

Then later Jim buys his parents old house without ever even talking to Pam about it. The house looks nothing like what Pam previously wanted. But she was content to live there and in the town they hate forever just to be with Jim.

Then even later Jim is like this place sux Im going to Philadelphia to be sports guy. Ditch that life I made you create for yourself here and lets go. Im going with or without you.

I disagree. Roy wasn't an asshole, he was just carefree and not mindful of others. Being an asshole is like being a bully and going out of their way to makes others suffer and that was not Roy.

I don't believe that you have to actively seek to hurt people to be an asshole. think that if you're completely inconsiderate of others (like he was), don't accept accountability, are dismissive of how you affect others, and won't even attempt to adjust your behavior then you're still an asshole.

He certainly starting improving those things after they broke up (actually, he got worse and got a DUI, but after the recovery he improved). We see later in the series that he got a lot better. And while his temper tantrum at the bar and attacking Jim weren't right, they were understandable.

But he was an asshole before the wedding was called off.

Roy and Pam just weren't a good fit, and independent of Jim's actions those two were never going to work permanently. It's partially why both of them ended up being way happier in the long run with other people.

But I do agree with others that some of Jim's actions in the later seasons, especially things like buying a house without consulting his wife, comes off as even worse than Roy not really listening to Pam's interests.

Jim was always a horrible person. Like Stealing Andy's phone to the point where dude has breakdown. He should not have punched the right but he was right when he was breaking down. Jim is a mean ass hole. If he wasn't a good looking dude no one would like him.

You can always tell the outcasts by whether or not they realize Jim is the only sane man.

In that context as a comedy show, I remember a few times Michael crossed the line still. It's okay to examine the characters in different context, I think, like if they were real co-workers.

Roy was definitely an asshole. Not irredeemable, but the show showed numerous times early on that he was one, it didn't "retcon" anything.

There are several scenes where he's incredibly dismissive of what Pam likes or wants to do. He's controlling, not letting her hang out with the people at work or go to office events on a few occasions, to the point they fight about it openly. He even tells Jim he's glad he's Pam's work friend so that he doesn't have to listen to her as much at home.

Not liking Jim is fine, but running defense for Roy feels kinda iffy.

If they were real, no one except Jim and Pam would be able to keep their job longer than a week.

Yall trying really hard to villainize Roy to justify Jim and Pam getting together.

Male fragility was a prominent facet of the archetype for Roy's character, along with highlighting to the audience how domestic abuse can manifest in different forms.

The Office writers weren't brave enough to go forward with a full cast of piece of shit characters like Seinfeld and Always Sunny.

He WASN'T worried, though, which is actually a big part of his problem. He didn't truly care about Pam until after he lost her. Again, he literally told Jim he was glad she had a work friend so that he didn't have to listen to her as much at home.

Hell, if anything, up until the actual breakup when Roy breaks stuff and tries to attack, they actually made him slightly more likeable as the series went on. Early on, he comes off cold and controlling, telling her "No, let's go home" rather coldly when she wants to go out after work with the rest of the office, and generally just not supporting her. As the series goes on, he starts to be portrayed as more immature than not, which actually kinda softens the character.

When you adjust for the fact that the show is exagerated for comedy he is a pretty decent guy. Almost no one on the show is legit a decent person by IRL standards.

Also comparatively better then many others in the office.

Micheal is a disaster of a person. Scotts Tots alone was downright heinous but his day to day behavior is immature and unprofessional sometimes to the point of being sexual harassment or legit danger to the jobs or safety of those around him.

Dwight pulls too many legit seriously dangerous stunts that risk others safety and can be obnoxious and callous at times.

Creed seems to have a rap sheet that would put him in prison for a dozen lifetimes.

Angela is a judgemental, rude, petty, cheating, homophobic, hypocrite who put a HIT out on Oscar(And had to be talked down from having it be outright murder as opposed to just severe harm)

Roy was emotionally abusive/dismissive with a violent temper. While Jim has some big fuck ups he generally seems to be more thoughtful and loving day to day...and has FAR more screen time to fuck up in as well.

Etc.
