People read his books because he promised to finish them.

Well, that's never been a reason for me choosing to read a book, but mileage clearly varies.

I'm very much in the "he doesn't owe you anything" camp.

All publishers require their writers to sign contracts, helps with clearly defining royalties, and copyright protections, among other things. If he took an advance (re; money) from a publisher, then they would have had him sign a contract promising to release the book through them. Talk to a literary agent if you don't believe me.

I think constantly promising he would have the book out by X date and making increasingly outlandish claims like saying his fans could lock him in a cabin until it's finished if it isn't out by X, did him no favors. It's like, yeah it sucks you have a toxic fan base, but why do you keep making these promises you don't intend to keep? Feels like trolling.

While it's true George doesn't owe the fans anything, what chaps my ass is how he's discussed it over the years like "...it's going good, it will be out on X date, I've written five hundred pages and gave it to my editor...."

I can absolutely understand how frustrating that would be, (I would have been devastated if Sanderson hadn't finished The Wheel of Time after Jordan died).
I also absolutely understand that people have flung a lot of hateful, ridiculous shit at Martin, and that the level of entitlement with some of his fans is just next level.
So yeah, if he wants to just say "fuck it", and play videogames instead of finishing the series, then good on him, (but I don't disagree that he should stop promising anything beyond this next book).

Geroge should not be harassed. He most certainly should not have people videoing his private home and what he does in his home.

People are allowed to be anoyed that he is not wrting the books. It has been more than a decade. So checking in and finding out he has yet another reason why he doesn't want to write them is reason enougth to be anoyed at him.

That being said it does not give you an excuse to harass him.
But if you want to vent about it to other people that is perfectly fine.

I think it's the opposite with Miura. He worked too much on Berserk in that first 17+ years. That insane amount of hours he put into the artwork detail in nearly every panel and trying to meet deadlines to get chapters out. He had to take hiatuses due to health reasons and eventually dropped dead due to that. He cared about his story though and wanted to see it through to the end.

With George R.R. Martin, he's going to die not finishing his book series, because of a lack of interest in writing the final books. Which sounds like he's lacked interest for well over a decade. Also he's rich now and living the easy life. Got a lot of other TV projects and stuff keeping him busy.

If he doesn't want to finish the books, than he needs to tell people he isn't.

Dunk & Egg is getting a tv adaptation, and Martin already confirmed he'd be involved with that as well as writing more novellas. Winds isn't coming out anytime soon.
