$250 for the day is an absolute BARGAIN, my photographer is running around $1700 and that's on the cheap end of photographers

Is that not... Incredibly overpaid considering the work involved? I know there's more to it than point the camera and click... But it's still only a day's work

Is the price so high because it's hard to get many gigs for these guys? Like maybe they only get 2-3 a month to work

You're running around, catching the moments that need catching while trying to be unobtrusive, with equipment worth several thousand dollars and then you go through all of the photos, collate the best ones, edit them, and the rest.

Yeah, kinda? I know weddings are expensive, my friend said they spent nearly 10 grand on flower arrangements at their one

I know there's post wedding work for the photographer, editing and picking the good pics from the bad, it still doesn't quite add up as being worth $2k work to me, what I make doing 2 weeks of work

It's incredibly specialized work. You book them on a very specific day, for a very specific time, for a very specific event, for a very specific type of photo editing, etc. and so on. Specialized work isn't cheap, because they basically have to work on your whim, and so it's priced accordingly.

If you want your photos to look good, you don't skimp on the photographer, and they do pay attention to a lot more than you'd expect.

I mean, in the amount of time it takes to work a wedding, they could have likely fit in... 3, 4 normal customers. You're paying for the fact that you're taking time that they could have spent doing other work.

I used to manage the back end of a photography studio.

Most of the money you're paying your photographer is to insure that you'll get all of the really good moments. Many work in teams to make absolutely certain it happens. Also, getting moving shots in focus is harder than you'd think. You can't just use presets. You're messing with shutter speed and stuff on the fly. This is why you'd want a professional.

The post work actually isn't that hard once youre minorly acquainted with Lightroom and every photographer edits differently. Most of CE is bright enough to figure it out well enough. Generally, youre getting overly warm/bright pictures because that's what the average person likes. You can batch correct them to an extent, but wedding venues have drastically different lighting all over.

In contrast, if you want to hire a photographer for a hs sports game it's a couple hundred bucks. They don't need to get all the best shots. No one gives a shit about the editing except for the very best of the pictures. Oddly enough the technical skill is higher though, since the speed of movement of things is more varied.

Long story short; taking the actual pictures is harder than it looks. You can't just snap photos with presets.

Not at all, the amount of equipment that goes in, I've seen photographers charge $5k-$10k for weddings.

When you factor in a days worth of shooting the wedding, then it takes a few more days to edit and get together a portfolio for a client, 2k makes sense. Not to mention your using upwards of $5k+ of equipment to shoot and edit the videos. It's a specialized job.

Caterer here. I work hundreds of weddings a year for a decade now.

100% of the time all staff on site get a meal. We plan extra food into our cooking to feed on site chefs, servers, DJs, photographers, wedding planners, and anyone else who might be on site that day. On the extremely rare occasion that the couple in question do not want to feed staff we bite the bullet and eat the cost to feed staff regardless. Worst case scenario it costs us like $100 to build some good will with everyone working that day.

This was an insane failure on the couple's behalf. I understand not every company is as generous as we are but you absolutely should feed your staff. They're busting their asses to make your perfect day perfect and someone falling out at hour 5 of your reception because they didn't get to stop and eat is just stupid. If your budget is that tight you shouldn't be having a reception at all.

My dad used to be a wedding photographer in the early 2000s, and I helped him out during summers. We went to weddings with a variety of budgets, and we didn't always get to eat, since the food was sometimes for the guests/family members only. You know what? We didn't complain about it. Sure, it sucked not being able to eat some of that tasty-smelling food, but we just ate elsewhere or at home after we left.

Now, granted, I don't think any of the weddings we went to were shoestring budgets for personal friends of his, but he'd never delete all his work over something that petty.

It was more like the guy said "no food and if you don't like it you can leave and I just won't pay you" so the photographer chose to leave without getting paid. Since he wasn't paid, he didn't turn over any work.
