How far in advance must this alleged cancer be prevented justifies surgical removal of the tissue that may one day cause cancer? You're not preventing cancer in children because the mean age of onset of penile cancer is 67 years of age and even then it's about 1 in 100,000 men who will ever contract it at all. Roughly 1.8 million baby boys are born each year, which translates to an expected 18 cases of penile cancer 60+ years from now.

Also keep in mind that the surgery is not risk-free. A study in Toronto found over a 14 year period 1 in 10,000 neonatal circumcisions resulted in complications requiring hospitalization and one in 83,000 resulted in DEATH. Let that sink in: More babies died from circumcision in the Toronto area than would be expected to ever even get penile cancer, let alone die from it.

My response is that circumcision lowers the risk of cancer and basically eliminates phimosis, so it's a procedure worth performing.

It's not just a narrative. It's a fact.

And while penile cancer is rare, phimosis is significantly more likely. UTIs are also much more common in uncircumcised people.

It's not just penis cancer that's being prevented.

America is known to sue everyone as a joke. But has anyone really sued for this?

Yes. More often they sue the hospital.

It's unfortunate that rare complications sometimes occur during a routine medical procedure.

But there are more than enough benefits (lower cancer risk, no phimosis, much lower UTI risk) to make the procedure worth doing. Complications can happen to anybody, unfortunately. It's just the nature of medical procedures.

People sometimes die at the dentist, too. It's a risk we all take. Fortunately, the chance is very low of anything serious happening.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) first acknowledged that there was no medical justification for routine circumcision in 1971. Last year, the AAP reaffirmed that it does not recommend routine circumcision. The American Medical Association concurred this year, calling routine circumcision non-therapeutic. No national or international medical organization recommends routine circumcision.
