By turn based I mean similar to FFX or Regular ATB

And with the budget of 16/ Rebirth etc

Do you think it would be successful today?

so lemme get this straight

you think a game with one of the most recognizable franchise names in gaming outside of like... pokemon

with an advertisting budget

and enough muster behind it to make it good

would flop?

Sure, it would sell.

It would just only sell five hundred million copies instead of three billion.

*looks at sales data for Octopath*

For a brand new series, Octopath 1 sold over 3 million copies as of 2022. Octopath 2 is over a million.

Triangle Strategy is over a million in 2022 as well.

If that is what new series can do, FF going back to that style should sell gangbusters. Dragon Quest 11 is over like 7 million copies sold?

Anybody notice that the people who are anti-turn based always act like any turn based game that's successful is an exception? Pokemon being one of the most popular games any year it releases? Oh it doesn't count because reasons. A new dragon quest sold well? Freak chance. Yakuza went turn based and is selling great? Uhhhhh...

Face it, turn based actually do sell, the idea that they just won't sell well is fiction.

Yep. There's turn-based RPGs that aren't as widely known as Final Fantasy that sell pretty well.

Square-Enix just needs to stop with the overinflated budgets. They can make pretty games without spending several hundred million making them. Hell, even their supposedly "better selling" action RPG strategy is barely working out because of their budgets.

SE remembers when they where the big dogs when it came to graphics

and they are bitter thats not the case anymore so they keep trying to recapture it

rather than just make good games

As already stated theres a lot of recent successful turn based games. A return to form from the OGs? Would get 1 big super cycle of sales even if it sucked.

I think proper context has to be added here. The first Octopath sold over a million copies in three weeks and was sold out in Japan for weeks. The sequel took close to 5 months to reach one million sales and underperformed in Japan. Those arent bad sale numbers at all but they arent spectacular either and one thing to keep in mind is that the first Octopath game introduced the HD2D art style as its main gimmick which could explain why it did as well as it did.

Dragon Quest is an established brand, much like Pokemon.

Plus what does the thread mean by turn based? Turn based as in traditional turn based of characters standing in a row taking turns or something more dynamic like Baldurs Gate? Actually scratch this didnt read the first post properly.

Now that would be a game id consider buying a console for. I passed on ff16, and this is coming from someone who has played literally all other 15 titles in the series and quite a few spinoffs over the years.

Honestly, SE has everything they need to make an amazing action RPG. They just spend too much focusing on the spectacle instead of fine tuning the combat.

Like FF16 was decent, but (spoilers) the eikon system was wasted. Clive gains the power of all of these different summons, but all it does is change the element of his attacks. It should have completely changed his fighting style for each one, to allow for more variety and longer combo chains that aren't tied to his ability cool downs.

And then FF16's other problem is that they turned the big boss battles into cinematic spectacles that take forever to complete. One boss took me nearly 40 minutes, simply because of all of the QTEs and cutscenes it had. It looked cool, but omg I was ready for it to be over like halfway through it. You could tell that those fights are where a lot of the work went into.

AFAIK, both, Bravely Default 2 and Octopath Traveler 2 were not really successful.

In the case of Bravely Default 2 you could say it's because it's not as good as Bravely Default / Bravely Second, but I think every Octopath Traveler fan agrees that the 2nd part was an overall nice improvement.

Did they? I cant find a total number of sales but apparently FF16 sold 3 million copies in a week while being an exclusive. IIRC the game met square expectations so it was by no means a commercial failure.

There hasn't existed a AAA budget JRPG since SE last made one so yes I absolutely do think it'd sell a bucket load.

Final Fantasy diverging from turn-based was Square solving a problem that didn't exist yet, and to this day hasn't been proven an actual issue.

Persona 5 has 7 million, Undertale has 7 million on Steam, and Three Houses has 4 million as an exclusive. FFXVI might eventually surpass TH but probably not before it stops being an exclusive and it does not seem like the type of game to have strong legs like them.
