A good union job that he and Reagan probably helped killed while his children were in diapers in the 80s.

I asked my dad about his past wages. He says he was making around $5/hour at age 13ish for a couple hours' janitorial work in local shops before school in 1971ish, and $10/hour at 14/15ish to do some seasonal logging work after school. First full-time job he thinks he started around $7.50/hour as a mechanic. I know it was enough that he had bought at least 3 cars before he turned 20, and a couple houses before he settled in the one where he still lives now by around 30. Today naturally he's flat broke because he never had any idea how to save money.

According to the calculator, that's a whopping $38.67 and hour...for JANITOR work...when he was fucking 13. Plenty of people in their 30's and 40's don't make that much doing more "serious" jobs.

lol this country is fucked, and Republicans are basically to blame.

Even if they were making like $4/hr out of high school in the 70s that's like $23 an hour today, which no place is hiring at that point without degrees and certificates and shit.

Hell, plenty of entry-level places that DO require degrees/prior experience don't pay that.

IIRC, minimum wage with inflation should be something like $30/hour today. The big fight in the last 5 years or so to make it $15/hour is like half of what it REALLY should be. The smart thing would be index MW to inflation, so it automatically rises with the passage of time, but of course we can't have nice things.

Friends,

First off I am 60.
In high school or before My first per hour job, I made like 1.35 an hour.

In high school I had 3000 dollars in the bank. I told my daughter last night. she
makes like 35, Dollars an hour as a nurse, and is LIVING AT him, and we bought her car
and pay the car insurance, I think she pays no rent.

I told her she should have 30,000 in the bank, if I can do 3000 at 1.35, she
can do 30,000 at $35.

well she has like NOTHING.

you guys with out houses, never seem to take into account all the money you have to PUT into a house in 20 years. a new roof, 15K, a new heater, and AC, 10K. there is a million other
expenses. a new shed in the back yard, 5K.

My dad had a million dollars in the bank, do you know how he made that money. the HARD WAY

he SAVED IT!!!!

The "guys without houses" are still paying for that shit (plus profit) to the landlords of the property they rent. Then they're told by the bank that they can't afford a mortgage that's less than the rent they've been paying for a decade plus. In other words:

If so then yea I would agree.

But if so why have you never sat down and discussed money? Your house your rules.
This scenario you presented is odd....

I mean, if we could get UBI and a good social safety net (health care etc.) guaranteed for all citizens, along with employees being free to unionize, then I think scrapping minimum wage and "letting the market decide" could work.

But as long as one side literally needs the job to survive and the other side can treat employees as an easily replaced, expendable resource, the idea that just letting them negotiate would lead to the best outcome for everyone is sheer lunacy.

It is definitely worse these days than in the past. If we let the owner class do as they please with no restraints the advantage taken will be unending.

My parents said similar so I just did math.

7% on a house that cost 10 more is more

Example figure out a $30,000 house at 15%
Now try a 300,000 house at 7%

Ask your parents what their house cost and compare to average
