I wouldn't put too much stock into that observation.

being a bit reductive here aren't we

Not really. You might find Lewis's writings on the "moral instinct" interesting.

Atheists are more likely to be left leaning while Christians tend to be pretty far right.
Pretty much this, and nothing is less Christ-like than the Right.

Your sig is untrue
To you, it might be.

But in most instances, it takes very little effort to do the right thing.

Most of the time you have to go out of your way to be a dick to someone.

For example, a person asks to refer to them as a "They/Them". You have two choices. Say "Ok", or get yourself in a tizzy as to why you're not going to do that.

You heard someone got an abortion. You can use little effort to sympathize with/for them, or you can lecture them about their decisions.

In both instances, the less effort you put in, the better off you are.

Maybe other people's standards of "good person" are just slightly higher than "not actively and needlessly being a dick."

It's always jarring for me. I'll be talking to a girl who says how important her faith is. Then if we see some guy struggling in real life or in a movie we're watching, she won't empathize at all. This will be AFTER she questioned me how I have morals if I'm not religious. It's like be nice to people. That's fucking it.

Yeah I don't get why people struggle with comprehending empathy. Did lead poisoning fry their mirror neurons? Once again, plenty of animals who have no concept of religion demonstrate empathy and altruism.

And there the other day, my local Christain radio was going on normalizing suffering. If you're having a bad time, smothered by inescapable poverty, it's okay because God has a plan for you! Maybe the brainwashing got to them.
