According to Google it's a combination of operating costs and the fact that closing out takes hours.

You'd think they'd want to be open when most people aren't working their 9-5 though. Instead they overlap with most people's work schedule which leads to less people going and thus getting less people giving them money/ using their services. Move those same 8 (or however many) hours into the evening and they'd make more.

I'd think they wouldn't want to have shifts that would push into night time for security reasons.

I work at a bank and used to work on the branch side. It typically only took 15 - 30 minutes to close tops. I mean maybe it took an hour once on the busiest possible day when a ton of stuff went wrong but I dont think its the norm. Although before computers I could see it taking awhile to balance the cash.

To answer the question though, a lot of banks are having trouble fully staffing branches lately because its a lousy job that doesnt pay much.

Because 90% of banking can be done online or at an ATM, so why go into a bank branch?

I think the last time I went into an actual bank branch was when I needed to get a certified check to buy a car with, and that was almost 10 years ago. I opened a Roth IRA with my bank 3 years ago and was able to do it all on my phone.

ah yes, 90% of banking is...moving money from checking or savings, or withdrawing money

that other 10%?

not important

Or opening an account, depositing a check, requesting a loan, etc.

All stuff most banks let you do online nowadays.

I work for a bank and there is almost zero reason to go to a branch. They're basically obsolete and only exist to cater to old people.

Only regular reasons would be to get a debit card made on the spot, a cashier's check, an international wire that can only be sent when the fed is open anyway, or if you're referred to one due to security concerns.

or apply for a loan
or set up a trust
or use a safe deposit function
or get the services of a notary
or convert foreign money to regular money because almost no banks do that at a drive up
or, if applicable, dmv services instead of waiting thirty nine hours at the dmv
or, if applicable, pay utilities

just because you don't use any other function of a bank, doesn't mean no one else does lmfao

I mean, I got a mortgage through my bank 12 years ago. I did it entirely online with the exception of closing. They did call me to get verbal approval to run a credit report, but I still didn't go into a bank branch. And that was before my bank had a phone app. So yea, little more than "filling out a form to schedule a in-person consultation".

Yep this has always annoyed the hell out of me too. The only time everybody can actually make use of a bank is lunchtime when the queue is so massive you may as well not bother.

Fucking no wonder theyre closing down all their branches, they get absolutely zero sympathy from me close them all down for all I care.
