15 year old Honda CRV. $3k worth of repairs (oxygen sensor for engine, leaking power steering fluid so it needs a new rack, alignment, and exhaust muffler replacement). It's otherwise in good condition, but a lot of miles at 180k. If I bought a new Honda CRV and financed it, it would probably be just under $40k, so I'm looking at like $2500 a year for a new car if it lasts 15 years and has zero repair issues, which we all know there will be issues.

I'm on the fence since repairs = value of car and it's old, but a new car will probably cost just as much over the long haul. I would think if I spend this $3k and get at least one more year out of it I'm close to break even, but then I look at its age. If I got like 2 or 3 or 4 years with just that repair I'd think it'd be an easier choice.

With a car that old, you can pay $3k now, and it could brick again next month. I'd say get a new one.

180k isn't a lot of miles for a Japanese car. Also, they don't make cars to last nowdays. They want you to keep pumping money into it. The choice is real easy for me, I'd repair your old one.

My last car I brought into the shop because the motor controlling the wipers broke, at least 400 CAD to fix. Then both brake lines failed the day I got it out, close to a grand to fix. Then 2 months later it broke down again. So I was paying 2k+ to fix a vehicle that wouldn't last me the winter.

My suggestion is to get a company to pay you 1-2k to take it away and use that money to either lease or put a down payment on a newer vehicle. All those little repairs add up, and you could end up being out another 3-4k by the end of next year, just isn't worth it. While you may fix this issue, its a 15 year old vehicle, and dozens of other things could end up failing in the next year.

If car prices have returned to sanity, I'd say just get a new car.
I don't think they have yet, so it might be worth repairing, because seriously fuck the greedflation of car prices.
