Like its such a dumb question because no one actually answers it honestly.

half the time when I say "Im good, you?" people don't even respond to the question, they just move on to other stuff

At least I can answer that honestly by saying "I don't know."

Granted, she actually was interested in more than "good, you?" but you never know if you just say that. Not saying you should go on a rant or detail your entire day but some people appreciate a genuine response because it shows you're interested in them, or that they're worth your time.

Do people who think you have to give a detailed report not understand summarization? You can respond with one or a handful of words that give a general idea of how you're feeling/doing like "great" or "busy" or "okay" or "not so well". If the person you respond to is interested in more detail, they can ask for more information. It's really not complicated.

It's merely polite noise. You say, "great!" or "pretty good, how are you", or even just repeat "how are you?" back (without explicitly answering the question, because it's not actually a question).

I hate when I answer and do the "and you?" and they don't answer back. I feel like a dummy or something when people use "How are you?" as just a greeting. How am I supposed to know when to legitimately answer?

I remember my manager admonishing me for just asking my coworker what I needed rather asking some greeting that lacks any depth yet is supposed show I care. Like he knew I constantly felt like shit and choose to avoid actually doing anything to show actual care but wants to rag on me for being direct.

Whenever I'm asked, I give a genuine number between 1 and 10. Sometimes I ask people for a number between 1 and 100 for a more genuine response. Literally everyone I ask is kinda taken back. They like it and the conversation kinda flourishes from there.

I average out about a 7 but sometimes I'm a 5. Sometimes I'm an 8 or a 7.5.

I mean I don't like small talk but it's part of the general social contract to take part so I deal with it.

Seems to be a US thing. It was very strange for tourists like us, when we traveled to the east coast this summer and were asked about how we are all the time.

In our country, when we ask someone "How are you", we mean it. We want to know how the other party is, or else we wouldn't have asked.

Its a social issue thing and it's hilarious how some people in this topic thinks it's not them.

This topic makes me feel like on page 1 we should stop talking to people for good.

I like when people actually ask me how I am doing, so I can sway it into an actual conversation, though I usually want the subject on the person who asked me.
