If you waited this long, might as well just wait to see if the next Nintendo console is backwards compatible. It'll probably be out within the next year. But if you really want a Switch, might as well go with the OLED

I swapped off my original switch for a OLED model starting a month ago and imo this is the one to go for.

The switch stand at the back actually functions extremely well, battery life is definitely improved, games look really good on the small OLED screen to the point where if the performance is fine I would opt to get a game on the switch compared to the steam deck, and one thing I like about the pokemon OLED switch (I'm not sure if this is on the normal OLED model since I only ever used this pokemon scarlet and violet one) is that the joycons+switch itself is made out of a matte-like material.....it feels a good bit better to the touch compared to the original switch's more glossy-like material.

If you are going for a switch now I'd go for a OLED model for sure.

*The OLED dock also has a built-in ethernet port. Useful in case you ever want to play smash ultimate or mario maker 2 online and don't want to lag up the joint. In case you did not already have your own usb ethernet adapter to use on nintendo stuff anyway*.

Indies and 3rd party games will regularly go on sale via physical and digital copies, but you are going to be paying some money for nintendo's 1st and 2nd party stuff. Same as always basically.

How does the battery life compare to the regular Switch?

I feel like I can get around 4 hours more on average compared to when I was playing on my original switch. I had a 1 hour and 16ish minutes trip (so about 2 hours 32 minutes round trip) to the doctor's office (and I wasn't driving for once. Whooo) 2 days ago. I always set my brightness to slightly over 80 percent.....anywho going off a 100 percent charge and playing mario wonder while connected to my phone as a hot spot for online play, the switch was at 83 percent by the time I got back to the house. If this was my original model, It'd probably be looking at a 30 something percent charge.

You're an adult with enough expendable income to buy a game console for yourself. You might as well get the slightly more expensive best version. Honestly this applies to any one time purchase for a product meant to last. $50 is nothing. It would be one thing if it was for a kid that might need it replaced or had siblings that would demand another one, but it's just you.

Unless you desperately want to play with Joycons, or Ringfit Adventures, I'd suggest waiting. Nintendo didn't learn their lesson and many games have issues running natively on their hardware. Not to mention that their games are ridiculously expensive. I'm not advocating buying a steam deck, but at the same time a steam deck can run some switch games without issues, better than a switch can. It might not have a better battery life, but Valve gives their console a bit more tlc than Nintendo does theirs.

Wait until next year, or the year after when Switch 2 is announced. The rumored specs are supposed to be far better than the Switch.

I'd say get a red box switch or a lite. V2 (red box) has great battery, the lite is cute and the smaller screen makes games look sharp.

If you get an OLED test and see if it has green tint. I went through 5 of them and they all had it to varying and degrees, which was very distracting for darker games like resident evil.

If you plan to use it like a console, where you primarily play it on your TV, then the regular switch is fine. If you plan to play in handheld mode often, then the OLED has the best display.

If they announce a new Nintendo console by the time you're ready to buy, then sure, wait for that. But otherwise, don't hold off on buying because of some "coming out soon" rumors. There have been rumors about a "Switch 2 coming out within the next year" for like the last 5 years.

That is the original model of the switch. That is why this one is cheaper. (I can tell by the smaller screen size and the kinda' shitty original model switch stand in the back on the bottom left picture there).

That, and under the details:

Welcome to the world of Nintendo. When they made the switch to OLED that was the time to upgrade the inner specs, mainly the ram from 4gb to 8gb. I digress. What's worse is that they will try and justify the high price of their product as its a premium product. I get their products are usually better due to quality control, but even DOOM 2016 was down to 1/4 the price 5 years after it was released. Unlike Zelda which went up in price due to a sequel being announced.

I like supporting the developers, but if it continues I'm sailing the seas.

Yeah, but youd want to swap out the SSD for a bigger one, which takes a bit of doing, unless you just want to install games to microSD like on Switch.

If you can get a refurbished one thats even cheaper, thats likely the way to go.

Next Nintendo console confirms backwards compatibility and comes out next year. If you get anything get a switch lite to tide you over or a limited edition console that will hold its value decently well. Anything else is a waste of money at this point tbh. Its like buying an iPhone a month before the reveal of the next one with no price drop or gift card to sweeten the purchase.

Its honestly just better. Its far more comfortable as a controller than the Switch is, as the JoyCons are garbage.

If youre already a Steam user, you get access to all those games, and if youre not, Steam games are far cheaper than Switch games.

EmuDeck is probably the best and most comprehensive emulation setup you can find. You just run a wizard, and it sets up all the emulators for you in about 5 minutes. Then you just need to put your bios files and roms on there, run Steam ROM Manager and tell it to scan / export, and youre pretty much good to go. Your Steam library will have a dedicated collection for each system, e.g. a Super Nintendo collection with all those games in there, and the emulators are configured with common sense hotkeys, like Select + L1 is Load State and Select + R1 is save state, etc. The only tricky bit is multidisc PS1 games, as it will typically scan each disc and it shows up multiple times, but that is solvable with some doing if you put the games in a folder with the games name and make an m3u playlist listing the disc files, then have it only scan the playlist.

Plus, the Steam Deck can emulate most Switch games better than the Switch can run them, though not as well as a desktop, obviously.

It does, and yes you can. I dont typically do that, but I have a DisplayPort KVM with my computer in one port and a Thunderbolt dock in the other, and if I need to work with the Steam Deck in desktop mode, I just dock it and switch over to input 2 so I can use a mouse and keyboard.

You can also pair a PS4 or PS5 controller with it etc., and just use that as a controller if you dock it to your TV.
