Kinda glad we finally got it here. I know it had a PC release, but it stripped most of the new content from it and was basically just the base US version really.

If you don't know, there's basically 3 iterations of Metal Gear Solid on PS1: The Japanese version, the American version, and the Integral version.

Japanese version:

• Only had Easy and Normal difficulty (You had the option to turn radar off on any difficulty in NG+, which is unique to this version)
• didn't have any new game plus cosmetics like the tuxedo.
• All voice acting is in Japanese.
• Has naked Johnny Sasaki when Meryl knocks him out >_>
• Has unique Psycho Mantis dialogue for certain game save data that aren't in any of the other versions, like Snatcher, Policenauts, Mystical Ninja Goeman, Tokimeki Memorial, and a few others.

Then the American version came out and added:

• Hard and Extreme difficulty
• English voice acting
• Cosmetics for NG+ (Tuxedo Snake and Spider-man Ninja).

They also sold the 300 VR missions as a separate game.

Japan saw the improvements that Americans got and were like FUCK. So they made an Integral version just for them, which is basically what the Substance and Subsistence is to MGS2 and 3. It got everything from the American version as well as:

• An extra difficulty (Very Easy, which gave you a silenced MP5 with unlimited ammo)
• A 3rd cosmetic for NG+ (Sneaking Suit Meryl)
• The ability to play the game in First Person View on New Game+
• A mode that let changes the guard patterns, camera angles, and security cameras for a different playthrough experience
• Voice acting is only in English but has the option for both Japanese and English subtitles (tho item descriptions and other text are Japanese only).
• Johnny Sasaki is in underwear now for some reason >_>
• Added 2 new codec channels. One plays various themes from Metal Gear 1 and 2 in certain areas, and the other gives text commentary in certain rooms about the development of the game (only written in Japanese though)
• Took away the base VR missions that were in MGS1. But Integral instead came with a 3rd disc that was the 300 VR missions that were sold separately in the states. Getting Big Boss rank in the main game also unlocked all the VR missions at once instead of unlocking them piecemeal as you play them. Plus getting Big Boss rank in the main game was what let you get close up photos of Mei Ling and Naomi Hunter >___> (instead of the US version which required you to 100% VR Missions)

So basically it's the definitive version of MGS1. If you never played MGS1 ever before, you should play the base US version first, because all the item text is in Japanese in Integral and you won't be able to read them. But if you've play MGS1 before and know what all the items do, then hell yeah definitely play Integral.

It was very confusing. No story. I played mgs soon after and am a big fan of the series

Yeah, it's here. I'm playing it right now. You just have to download the optional free Japanese language pack to play it.

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion but I do wish the Twin Snakes remake was included as well as it really is another good way to enjoy the original. Might not be as good for some but it always was a great experience to me

That said, I am glad Integral was included in Master Collection. It really is the definitive version of the original PS1 game

Japanese Snake sounds like Campbell lol.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to trying out the Alternative Round mode where they change up the guard's patrols and camera. That seems like fun

For what it's worth, it still plays well. I haven't encountered any problems or slowdown on Steam Deck. Plus they let you spoof fake save data from various Konami games on the memory card so you get all the possible dialogue for Psycho Mantis, as well as an option to give yourself completion data to unlock all the rewards straight away.

But otherwise, yeah. No widescreen, no 60fps, no sharp resolution.

It is pretty good. You won't really notice much of a difference on the 1st playthrough other than the extra codec channels, but the NG+ stuff it has is cool. You might as well commit to that version for achievements and completion since it has the most stuff in it (as long as not being able to read item descriptions doesn't matter to you)

I put on the JPN Metal Gear Solid for a second and wow the voices are weird. Did MGS2-4 only have English voices even in Japan?

They should have Japan voices.
I know MGS 2 has it and it's better than MGS 1.

My only issue with integral in the Master Collection is all of the item descriptions are in Japanese. It's been so long since I've played through MGS1 I actually needed the descriptions.

So I'm doing my first play through on the US edition and then I'll just insert the completion data into integral.

I always wanted to play Integral back in the day when reading about it.

Yeah, that's the only downside to Integral. If you don't know what the items do by memory, then just play the US version. I hope someone makes a mod to make the game 100% English

The only real thing I'm interested in from this release are the game scripts, which may have info in it that is not previously known like the MGS2 Game Script in the Document of MGS2.

I haven't looked at the scripts or master books of any of the games yet. Does MGS2 come with the Document of MGS2 also?

It does not.

The Document of MGS2 still remains to this day one of the weirdest thing that actually got somehow released. It's literally just a game of 'hey play around with the game engine! and look at all our game assets' lol

Johnny Sasaki in MGS1 Japanese was actually in his underwear. It was the US version that made him hang dong. Then in Integral, they put him back in the underwear
