Seriously, they look so dreary and depressing. Empty/closed boxes all over the floor, carts blocking aisles, and all of their grocery sections always look like a complete mess. One time last year, I went to the one down the road from where I live and they had an old display full of spoiled and bent up Hershey bars. I bought one just to make sure, and the chocolate looked molded. That display was there for a good few weeks or so.

Side note, I feel like I've made this thread before, but I don't remember for sure.

Even low staffed places don't usually look as bad as the average Dollar General. I'm guessing standards are just stupidly low.

Because they are still staffed better than Dollar General. Their business model is to run on impossibly low overhead costs to basically make competing stores not feasible to open and operate

Probably management doesn't care about how their stores look like. Usually a company has higher ups from a regional district that would visit a store in that area to see how it's fairing compared to their other stores... But I guess in dollar generals case, they don't care or if they do all they wanna know is how well the store is performing

In addition to this, they are impervious even to robberies which are frequent enough to run any other well managed store out of the neighborhood.

Now that's insanity.

Don't have a Dollar General but we have a Dollar Tree and it's the same story. I'll see a half empty drink left on a shelf and come back the next week and it's still there.

DG has 1-2 people on a good day usually. And they are often busy. If not with customers: stocking.

Came here to post this.

There's been research that shows evidence of some customers even preferring that look. Something about liking "no frills" shopping.

I watched a documentary about how Dollar General operates on incredibly low labor and operating costs... The simple answer is these stores are meant to be a stop gap in poor communities and food desserts that siphon more money out of those communities, and you actually pay more per ounce or use of the special "valu" sized products.

This, although usually more like 2-3 from what I've seen lol. And let's not forget that many of the employees themselves are bottom of the barrel hires.

I low key hate how one popped up near my house. We're not too far from town, like 10 minutes, so it's not like it's even that useful. There's a super market up the road too.

There used to be a local restaurant there, but that's been closed for years now. Sucks that something better didn't go in, or even better they just return that lot to housing or something.
