Take some ibuprofen. It won't make the pain go away but it should help lessen it to a degree that you can sleep for a few hours. Source: me. I was in this position a couple years back.

Edit: Also sleeping with my face on the side it hurts towards the pillow.

I second the ibuprofen and some ice. I've been in the same boat before and those are my go too. Also been known to vigorously brush the sore spot and Listerine. Sometimes it's just some stuck food you didn't know about.

most dentists will give you a payment plan. it's going to be expensive, but if you've got a root canal issue you could literally go insane from the pain/lack of sleep. If the root decays enough to get infected it could spread so that you lose more teeth or the infection could spread to another part of your body. Teeth issues have also been linked to Alzheimer's/Dementia.

Other than the drugs mentioned, it also helps if you lie down and "feel" the pain. Trace the pulse of pain felt from your toth spreading into your body, feel it dispersing. Next time you know you already fall asleep and wake up painless (until you accidentally trigger the pain again)

Do yourself at least a minimal favor and drive to a 24 hour gas station and find yourself some ibuprofen. And you're going to be in hell tomorrow if you actually have to work with the toothache.

Don't swallow it then. Just leave it in your mouth. Within 20 seconds the alcohol will numb your mouth

Surely you have some ice you that you make an ice pack with. I've used both ice and heat. Hearing pads put me right down. Thank God I have one of those that automatically shut off after a couple hours.

I had a tooth ache like that a little over a month ago. I went to the dentist and was prescribed antibiotics and 800 mg ibuprofen. (The latter is a waste of money. Just take 4 of the 200 mg ibuprofen instead. It's much cheaper that way.) Then I got a root canal done a few weeks ago. Then today I had a temporary crown put on. And I'm getting a permanent crown in three weeks from now.

A tooth ache can be a debilitating, demoralizing ache. I would absolutely recommend going to the dentist. They can likely do more for you than the ER can -- unless there's an emergency dentist near you. Then you might go to them.

This is good advice. Since they're students, they're going to be extra careful not to cause undo pain as well. They're being graded on it.

You don't want to yank it. Trust me on that one. I had a ton of pain in my upper back tooth, turns out it was my lower back tooth that was the problem child. Teeth are like that with the weird wiring.

As somebody with just a few rotten stumps left in my mouth, I can confirm. Like it feels there is pain in my lower jaw, but it's actually a piece of food stuck in an upper tooth causing the problem. At least left/right side of your face seems to be accurate.

TC, I'm not sure if it's state-based or federal, but after the surgery, you can ask for charity forms. It's like 40 pages of paperwork, but everything about your case is very qualifying for full coverage in this way.

Get the fucking operation, though. This can permanently damage you, even kill you. This pain is your body telling you that you can't delay further.

Door dash'd some today as soon as I got off work from a walgreens I wasn't near took two and now I'm feeling good. I'm gonna have a good rest, thank you and the rest of the topic for baring with me last night. With this I can safely wait for the actual appointment. I won't take it in an attempt to curb off the aches before they start, only when I actually feel them, I feel that if I develop a habit of taking them to avoid the pain before it even starts that I might end up overly reliant on them.

That's good to hear and I'm glad that your pain has subsided a little bit. Try to learn when your pain starts coming back so you can take more ibuprofen 15 minutes before it starts, and don't be afraid to raise the dosage so long as you're in a safe range. I would take 400mg about every 4 or 6 hours, but it would be okay to do like 600 - 800 every once in a while. Taking too much too often will damage your kidneys.
