Adam was always terrible and exceedingly racist to Japan. The problem was it's "ok" to be racist to the Japanese and he strongly associated himself with people like Zoe Quinn which makes people defend you even more. He took sides on the culture wars that people care about like Gamer Gate and it excused him of his other awful behavior.
