Big believer in no idea belonging to anybody (aka, down with copyright), but it does make me sad to see how people pervert the original intention of Winnie the Pooh. I was hoping public domain would allow greater exploration of these characters in a way that big corporations are too afraid of doing. The truth is, parody laws already allowed this type of content and there's an entire industry built off of being edgy with kid properties (many of which I enjoy).

Hope they get it out of their system.
I assume in a decade or so they will have gotten it out of the system and we will see some worthwhile work that is based off of intelligent analysis of the original.

Honestly I'd be kind of sus if they started shoving works out that they were claiming to be thoughtful immediately after the expiration.

Disney put Filmation out of business over a Snow White movie Happily Ever After and they bullied CBS into not producing an animated series, Peter Pan and the Pirates. Fox later produced the cartoon because they were already at war with Disney. Even then, Disney still threatened a lawsuit if Tinkerbell was depicted as anything other than a ball of light. The studio shot back by reading from the original story Peter and Wendy where she's described as a chubby girl with red hair.

If a character is in the public domain and Disney owns the first version that everyone thinks of when that character is mentioned, they will sue claiming that you're trying to create intentional brand confusion. It's just like companies flagging YouTube reviews over bogus copyright claims. The law doesn't matter so much as who has the most money and influence.
