At it's core I only see "cancelling" to be a more effective means of boycotting/protesting a company. In the past local chapters of x group could organize, but nobody gave a fuck about their efforts. Now with social media they're able to organize online and solidify their numbers against an organization, product, or cause. The fact that the media doesn't refer to what right-wingers did to Target & Bud Light as "cancelling" shows you everything you need to know about how it's a term used exclusively to depict when seemingly left-wing causes/actors do something that leads to someone losing their status, job or platform. Jack Thompson was trying to "cancel" video games for decades and yet to this day I still don't see it referred to as that.
