im close friends with someone thats CLOSE friends of a couple people that got cancelled.... he never said "oh be lenient, they were a good person around me". He said he's "surprised it happened but fuck them, theyre a pos." and cut them out of his life once he found out

Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson , essentially grew up together.
I would be hard pressed not to defend someone I knew for 35 years.
Not saying they made the right call..

But while most of you say, if they were family, you wouldn't give a crap..
Either you're a liar, or you don't actually love your family.

It's heartbreaking , and it's not that simple and easy for most people who love their family to watch them go away for ever...

I don't believe those who say they would cut ties so easily with family..... maybe if you were never on good terms.. but danny and ashton have essentially known each other since the 90s at this point, and they were not just colleagues, they seemed to develop a strong friendship.

None of this excuses what he did, and I personally can never understand forcing yourself on another sexually , so yes I believe he got what he deserved.
Just saying if it was your family, you would most likely not abandon them so easily..

he never would have gotten the death penalty over this.

that's not an eye for an eye.... while some might be alright with execution for rape, I don't believe in the death penalty , but if I did , it would warrant something far more extreme... ( again not saying what he did was not extreme.. but execution if I beleived in it, would have to be only for the most extreme cases)

we need better prison rehabilitation rather than just committing legal murder against criminals just because we don't know how to deal with/cure\rehabilitate them.

Investigate the entire Church of Scientology and shut them down once and for all.

I am legit sad that Kurtwood Smith wrote a letter. I heard he was a really nice guy IRL and I really liked him as an actor. Now he's more like the villain he played in Robocop.

Most celebrities are like that unfortunately. You know how they say never meet your heroes and all. Just take a look at the signers for that Roman Polanski petition if you want even more disappointment.

Writing a letter doesn't mean you're not a nice guy. It just means rape isn't a deal breaker in your friendships >_>

A bunch of people rightfully criticized the cast of That 70s Show for demanding leniency for a convicted rapist based on him being a "good friend". And you, for some reason, decided to come into this topic and start calling people out for making blanket moral judgments.

Apparently Masterson have dirt on Kutcher.

And after all this time, I still don't know what the fuck Scientology is all about. I don't know if I should be proud of that or not.

I think one of the ex-cast members posted about how Kutcher planned something bad on 2002, the same year Kutcher's ex-gf was stabbed. The murder was pinned on some serial murderer. The claim is that Masterson knows something about it.

It was 2001. The claim is that this was Kutcher and Masterson, and Masterson could've testified against Kutcher if anybody were to accuse him of anything.

You can't. Supreme Court decision has outright said so, even heinous rapes don't count. Taking a life is irrevocable and there is no continuation and no chance for healing for the killed.

As for the letter, I don't have any problem with someone writing leniency letter for someone they knew. I feel like it is pretty childish to believe everyone who knows someone can give testimony to every part of their life, they were asked to give their insight on the person they knew, not the complete person.

We all have small windows in which we can see into people's lives, and there are plenty of people who have seen only the good in horrible people because that is all those people showed them.

Depends on who the rapist or murderer is, but yeah. Some judges have been known to be inappropriately lenient to a defendant just because they share the same religion.

People are outraged over this but it's very common. Almost everyone is against rape in theory but when one of their friends or family members is the one being accused then it's a different story.

On all of the hills to die on, I have no idea why KanWan chooses "You shouldn't judge rapists because you aren't perfect either". What a strange dude.

I find it hard to imagine I could stay friends with someone convicted of multiple rapes. I've dropped friends for a lot less than that. Kutcher's letter even outright states that Masterson would break off a friendship if someone did drugs. Is that where the line should be drawn?

Still though, it's possible to show support to an old friend without trying to reduce his sentence. Like they could have written him in private, wishing he gets treated well inside, hoping he becomes a better person and promising to help out his child. You can do all that genuinely and still believe he deserves the jail time.

Asking for leniency and making claims about him not being "an ongoing harm to society" is egregious and the criticism they got is justified.

i wouldnt want to be friends with a rapist either. if anything, i would want to distance myself as far from them as possible. the fuck were they thinking with those letters... smh
