Super in general completely rehabilitated everyone's impression of GT. Everyone universally only had bad things to say about it >10 years ago (except maybe that SSJ4 looks cool)

The first couple are...whatever...but I'll never understand people's weird enjoyment of "The dragon balls turn evil, even though they were literally created by Kami/Dende to be magical wish-granting items with a one year cooldown".

Why on earth would those balls then turn evil and try to annihilate the universe? It's one of the worst parts about GT, conceptually or otherwise, but people act like it's such a cool idea. No. Literally, the dragon balls exist within the story to keep things hopeful and fun rather than bleak and depressing. Do you really want the main timeline to be as depressing as Trunks' future, where every death is permanent and the dragon balls don't exist?

Also the whole idea of Piccolo's death is dumb as fuck. I honestly hate GT as much as Scotty pretend-hates everything else in the series.

Yes they were meant to be used for that reason. But they also weren't meant to be used over and over by the same group of people to fix their short comings. It was explained that after making a wish, negative/evil energy gathers in the dragon balls and takes a long time to disappear. This gives a reason why the dragon balls turn to stone and scatter around the world after granting a wish. Before the dragon radar you could spend your whole life trying to find the dragon balls and never find them all. Now Bulma treats the dragon balls like her own personal property that's kept locked up in her house and uses them for petty wishes like looking five years younger to show off to her friends.

Bro that's literally what Dende did. And he keeps upgrading them to improve their usefulness for that specific group of people. Goku legit went to New Namek to find Dende and ask him to make new Dragon Balls, and Dende said "hell yeah you guys saved us all, I'd love to help."

Like I said, it's just some dark/edgy fanfiction version of Dragon Ball where the dragon balls are actually a bad thing and wishing people back to life is considered a misuse of their power. Like bro, why do people want the dragon balls to have limits and drawbacks? They're literally what the story is named for.

There is also that nonsense with the black star dragon balls. Whose only purpose was to make an excuse to go visit a bunch of other planets and get the story rolling (if they just wanted Goku to be a kid again, they could have used the normal dragon).

But yeah, they are also a "dragon balls are bad" thing.

This is false. Toriyama himself said he thought Gohan was a loser and wasn't suited to be the hero so he brought Goku back. This and "Toriyama wanted to end the series at Freeza" keep getting repeated ad nauseum but there's no statements or evidence of this.

Super is great because it has some really cool fights, with decent fight choreography. That's literally all that matters about Dragonball.

Hardly. If anything, it was the natural progression of the story, considering Old Kai foreshadows exactly this throughout the second half of the Buu arc.

Old Kai is just a grumpy old timer though. There's nothing natural about making the Dragon Balls evil. It literally flies in the face of everything we know about them. It's dumb and obnoxious and it's one of the main reasons why GT sucks.

The last narrative text box in the Dragon Ball manga literally says "There'll surely be more trouble along the way, but somehow they'll always get through...and the dragon balls will be there for them!"

In what way is it natural to go from "the dragon balls will always be there for them" to "the dragon balls are being overused and have turned evil"

I haven't watched Super yet because I've been rewarching old Gundam series....but is Super that bad?

I did not like GT at all but I figured I'd give Super a chance once day.

I agree with the others. Watch battle of gods and resurrection f then pick up the series with the universe 6 arc.

and tbh even Resurrection F is kinda skippable, and it sucks anyways, easily the worst of the new movies, which are otherwise the bright spot of modern DB

The movie is worth watching, since Frieza becomes a significant character again later in the series.

It's definitely a great example of nostalgia taking the wheel though.

I think most of the GT hate actually originates from nostalgia, where when it hit mainstream audiences in the US, most of the target audience had outgrown DBZ, but have extremely fond memories of it.

GT was pretty great for what it was. Super manages to be a caricature of DBZ within a couple of episodes.
