I think the anime made it much more popular. Great animation for a story that is intriguing, but formulaic and fell flat toward the end.

I had a discussion with a friend about most successful Japanese movie, which we assumed would be Spirited Away, but to both of our surprise a Demon Slayer movie is the top of the list.

I am not super deep into anime, so while I heard the name Demon Slayer, I could not tell you anything about it. So it's success is out of left field for me

Yeah, it was the anime that really added to its popularity. The fight animation is insanely good. Every season, they blow me away with it.

The Anime is fucking amazing.

I think Japan liked it for being very Japanese. There's like yokai spirits and Yukata and Kimono everywhere.

It's pretty. Very pretty. So damn fucking pretty.

And that's it.

It gets the job done. Basic story but beautiful animation and great characters.

the anime's animation is the only real reason people give any shits about it.

once the anime ends it'll be one of those anime that people pretty much never mention again

It's a super standard battle shonen series that was heavily carried by its fight animation/chereography. It has one of the better anime adaptation.

I only watched the first season but the overall plot is boring and the characters are nobodies.

ufotable brought it up from nothing with their unlimited budget.

"I'll kill myself in the dream to wake up from your dream power and kill you!" Then he keeps killing himself in his dream to wake up it was a bit cringe to me tbh and there was the pervert friend if i remember correctly

I watched the first two episodes and thought ah this is good Id watch this and have not continued with it

I do love super Japanese/Youkai things though.

Though I prefer things like Mushishi, Kamisama Kiss or even Natsumes big book of friends

The main characters okay he's just kind of boring. It's the blonde one who is annoying as fuck. He's a coward, hides behind children, creeps on women, complains how trying is too hard and screams constantly. Like I can handle one bad quality but he's just like the amalgamation of everything terrible.

I actually like the pig mask guy. Though I have not seen past the train movie, it was so bad.

First half of season 1 was a hard watch due to Shitnitsu shenanigans.

It is Bleach with no filler and no bankai and ends quick instead of dragging.

I mean, if you asked most casual anime fans FMA would still probably make most of their top ten list likely. Which is arguably a even greater achievement then staying relavant through non stop material.

Honestly demon slayer is similar to the seven deadly sins in that it's a mediocre series that checked all the generic shonen box's for mainstream appeal and just got lucky. That's it.

Yes, but people still talk about the ones that you mentioned as well so the comparison is apt.

And plenty of people talk about Bleach, it's literally airing and is very much a "return to form" after having several years of filler + over a decade of being gone. You are confusing the fact that you don't know anyone watching it with it being the highest rated shoe this season + the fifth most watched (and its airing through Hulu, meaning that most of the lazy pirates aren't watching it/most of the base is "invisible").

Though you are right that the elitism is obnoxious.

I ask myself TC's question about One Piece all the time.

Someone sold it to me as a pirate adventure anime. I go in thinking it's going to be Japan's Sinbad, or maybe something to make me feel better about Pirates of Dark Water after all these years.

But, nah. It's a planet of hats battle shonen with a coat of pirate paint on top.

My point is some manga are less issues than Red Son Superman or an event like Blackest Night.

Also pretending people still care about Superman is a leg over anime is idiotic because Superman on the shelves is like 7th restart of him or something. Not even canonically the same character.

After the second season I definitely was getting bored with it because the animation quality carries what is otherwise an insanely standard level shonen anime that most people have already seen before. Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Black Clover, lost goes on.

The unique characteristics it has with Tanjiro humanizing the demons started to get weighed down, then it just turned into the soul society arc of Bleach where everything is Soul Reapers v Hollows, except with demon hunters v demons lead by whats their face.

I still need to watch season 3, but it being high quality in animation has made it insanely mainstream so even normies who didn't watch anime even like 5 years ago talk about it, & you're more likely to see a bumper sticker with Nezuko or something on a car now than anything with Naruto or DBZ.

If that was then you suck as making that point. Starting off by saying that "modern" anime, or just anime in general, is all flash in the pan is just being "old man shouts at clouds" or being elitist yourself. Acting like all anime is just a passing trend is the epitome of being elitist as well, so if that is your point then you are actively fighting against it. Then moving over to "well doesn't this one from my childhood still have people talking about how good it is?" just furthers that exact same message. It's being completely out of touch, full of it, or being elitist. Once again going against that message.

So yeah, if you aren't trying to just come across as a crotchety old man shouting about how western animation is better than everything else + it was better back in the good old days then you are going to need to work on your writing because it definitely doesn't come out at all that wayi.

So I live in Japan and i was here during the big boom.

Nobody talked about it before the anime. The anime came out JUST
when Covid started here. You know what I saw more than anything during that time? Masks with the characters fabric in them. You could see the main characters masks everywhere. Kids were wearing them during covid. They also had merchandise of it too.pencil cases, all that normal stuff. Plus, the theme song was sooooooo big out here. You couldnt go to a store without hearing it once. It was all over TV and even in arcade music games here.

A combination of right time and place (exciting new thing at the start of a confusing time), heavy marketing push, and an earworm song that played every 30 minutes. I dont know how it was in the US, but i had never seen an anime take off like that so quickly.

Its still around today but it has died off a lot. People are back to their mainstay anime like Conan, Pokemon, and shounen stuff.

Great animation consistent storytelling and hardly any filler without going on forever and having a conclusive ending

Many anime lack these qualities cause they are just used as ads for manga and suffer for it

Thats just because everyone overhypes shonen anime due to their popularity as a genre and even the bad ones like Blue Exorcist, Black Clover and Fire Force get more hype then actual good anime like: To Your Eternity, Summertime Rendering and Mob Psycho 100.

I will always hype up Jujutsu Kaisen though lets see how Season two does (currently airing).

Lots of people still care about Bleach. There's a new series, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, that started airing in October 2022 and season 2 is currently ongoing.

Like if you don't like anime, that's fine, but stop acting like animes are just fads that come and go. Plenty of them have longtime fans. Like, the only reason that talk about MHA has died down is because it's currently on break. MHA season 7 is expected to air sometime in early 2024. Guarantee you'll see tons of people talking about it then.

Generic Shonen + Some Good Animation
