Didn't have enough appreciation for this dude the first time I watched the show, but he's the antithesis of Walt in every way. He doesn't want his name on shit for his ego, he knows to leave well enough alone and enjoy the money from the gig he's got, and saw right through Walt's bullshit frame 1. BrBa is full of unlikeable characters, that's kind of the point, but every scene with this guy in it is just incredible

I'll probably watch Better Call Saul after rewatching this, and I'm glad they brought Mike back as a character for that one

Walt is a scumbag
Jesse is a scumbag
Hank is a bastard
Saul is a scumbag
Gus is a scumbag
Skylar is awful
Marie is awful
Walt Jr may as well not even be there

Despite being a killer, Mike was probably the most likable person on the show.

What about Jane? Probably in the same category as Walt JR. though she was integral for moving a plot forward. I haven't seen this in a long time but I remember never being completely angry or disappointed in Mike.

Mike is top tier. Hank is also top tier. Saul is top tier. Gus is top tier.

A lot of characters are top tier. Breaking Bad is one of those shows where everything (except Skyler, basically) clicks just right and the whole thing is great.

Jesse's my favorite because he's the one guy in the game who realized how fucking awful the game is. Mike may not have Walt's ego but for someone who could see right through him he still couldn't figure out the danger

I felt really bad for Jane. She had a really good streak going with sobriety and Jesse came along at exactly the wrong time to fuck it all up and it cost her her life. She was an interesting character, but mostly only served to move Jesse along as a person, unfortunately.

Walt's biggest asset was probably coming across as such a colossal loser that everyone underestimated him. Which is exactly how just about everyone who crossed paths with him ended up dead

This is a spoiler topic. I Still want to mark it anyway. Walt could have saved her life because he walked in while she was choking laying on her back!!!!!!! All Walt had to do was turn her over to her stomach so she would have thrown up probably on the bed/floor instead he watched her for a bit, took some money (I forger exactly why he was there) and just left as Jesse was more important to the business than him having a girlfriend. I literally cried at the time when her parents were talking about her funeral and picking out her favorite dress. Jesse probably got her using again, but still :/

I definitely didn't like what Walt did in that moment :( He coulda definitely did something there.

It's part of the genre. Tragic protagonist (not hero) goes down in a wake of bodies of everyone around him.

Very Macbeth. Or Hamlet.

There is this really weird connect/disconnect with me that Hank (that's the husband of Marie right). I know he got into a stone/gem hobby. *sigh* and I remember seeing that and just, certain things trigger memories. I still have some stones in a old box.

It was a heck of a show! I remember some of the Saul bits being just laugh out loud in such a serious downer show.

Her and Jesse were planning on leaving, walt knew if they left with all of Jesse's money they would have shot it all up in their arms and overdosed anyways or ran of money quickly. Walt let her die, cause in his mind he was saving Jesse and this was gonna happen eventually anyways.

Walt didn't just let Jane die, she wouldn't have died (at least, not then) if it wasn't for him.

as he was wrestling the bag of money away from them, as they were drugged out, she turned on her back which led to her choking on her own vomit.

so, when he said, "I killed Jane," he was telling the truth.

Is it blasphemous to say I thought Gus was a terrible character after a while?

He's like the big bad for the second half of the series, and he's just too dumb to shoot Walter outright. The better meth revenue could not be worth all the trouble and risk it put him in. I didn't find it very believable and started to lose interest in that aspect of the show.

I think that had to do with his eye on the vendetta, especially in light of some of the stuff we learn in BCS, and thinking Walter could be a piece that could be manipulated to the end.

That's exactly what it was. Gus was playing a long game, with his number one goal to kill the rest of the cartel members associated with the Salamancas. He just never expected Walt to exploit Gus's hatred for Hector to catch him by surprise.

Unrelated, but I also ended up really liking Saul lol. He really does embody that scummy lawyer with the lame billboards and radio ads super well. He's a goofy foil to the hard asses in the show

I just finished the last episode of season 3, full measure. For years, my takeaway was that Walt only ever cared about himself, but upon rewatching, I think Jesse might be the only one he cares about in a strange way. There's so many decisions he makes to his detriment to work with Jesse, or in this case, save his life.

He could have easily just let the two dealers kill Jesse and go on cooking for Gus, but he saves Jesse anyway. I can't quite figure out why that is; does Walt really care for Jesse for his sake, or does he just like having some sort of control over him?

Arguably, his vanity and hubris. Like every other reason he does something.

Jesse is the only one who knows. The only one who appreciates him for his skills. The only one who admires him, gives him credit, and doesn't try to match wits against him.

Walt is fond of Jesse in the same way Skeletor likes Evil-Lynn.
