Wage slaving ain't the way to having a nice nest egg so I've been thinking it's time to start saving some money to invest in a company but 3 things
Don't really know how to get started
Don't really understand it outside of the basic, buy share, get money relating to share basics
Don't really think it's just a one time payment thing

I think most people nowadays just stick with index funds like vti, spy, etc. They allow you to buy a diverse chunk of the stock market in one go rather than just a singular stock. Lower potential returns than nailing a specific good one and it sure isn't immediate, but in the long run it beats most investment strategies and requires no special knowledge or insight.

SPY for instance has been around since 1994 and has achieved roughly 10% returns per year over that span. Per portfoliovisualizer if you had invested $10k in 1994 it would be worth around $168k now. Or if you had started with $250 and invested $250/month over that span you would be at around $600k. Personally I'm a little skeptical you'll get those returns over the immediate future coming off such an amazing period in the market from like April 2009 to the end of 2021, but who knows the future? Just hope we don't hit a period like 2000-2009, when you would have literally lost money over the course of a decade.

401k is in a target fund, roth IRA is 85% S&P 500 index fund (FXAIX) and 15% in foreign investment fund (FZILX), HSA is all in total US market index fund (FZROX). I contribute 15% of my pretax income to the 401k (with employer fully matching the first 5%, love that free money), $600/month post tax to the roth IRA and max out the HSA at $260/month with a employer contribution of $500 year.

Not touching anything until I retire. 2022 was brutal, but got to buy a bunch of stocks at a discount, 2023 is much better, except for the last couple of days with the whole US credit getting downgraded.

Also do a employee ESPP that get me a 10% discount of the company stock. It's 3% of my income with a buy twice a year. I sell that right away to get that guaranteed 10% return. Have to pay short term gain on that, but I still come out ahead, and I hate holding just one stock.

Can be. If you have a fuck ton of money and then diversify into good dividend producing stocks.

Then again, if you have the kind of coin to generate fuck you dividends... you probably didn't need to invest like that in the first place.
