Because they can.

And screw coming up with new teaching methods to adapt to new technology. At least not for 100 and sub 100 level classes that are primarily attended by people forced to get some math for their major.

Yeah, they have a stranglehold over the school market, so they feel safe to price gouge everyone. Their calculators are so low tech that they're super cheap to produce, but of course they'd never willingly pass that on to consumers.

The bulk of the cost is paying for the software in the calculator.

Basically all those math programs you used to use have moved to online only subscription models. TI is literally the last company on earth that is making them completely offline.

Schools should just allow phones for the purpose of graphing calculator use or have classroom tablets and students just share in groups.

When I was in school 10 years ago you could rent out a calculator from the library. Along with renting out a laptop. I imagine that is still a thing.

edit: I looked it up and yes it is still a thing. We have several dozen scientific calculators. They can be checked out for eight weeks. Graphing calculators are available to be checked out for seven days.

I remember being forced to have one of those for school and we barely used it. This is what I used mine for, though: I used a pencil to write down all of the geometry formulas that I couldnt remember, so I could just slide the calculator down and have all of the formulae. Ha, easy C.

I still have mine from middle/high school.

Still works, but just takes up space in my desk drawer. I remember some kids playing games on there's, but I never found out how or what model did it.

I remember these too:

Now I'm feeling nostalgia because of freakin calculators.

I been using the free TI emulator app on Android. So never paid for it. Hasn't been mentioned yet but the high tech calculators such as TI-92 are banned at schools during tests.

They like; "You want to cheat in that math class? Pay up."

It is like the pay to win version of math. I know some teachers do not allow calculators at all but some do and if you are like "but i only have a graphing one" and they are like "okay just don't use the capabilities of it to gain an advantage." Yeah okay I'll do that sure.

My high school classes always required a graphing calculator, but then never let us use it to solve graphing problems because we had to show our work.

... so why did I need a graphing calculator?

I have one but the screen displays stuff all choppy. I hear this is a fairly easy fix if you know how to solder stuff. one day I want to get it running again, because while it's stupid schools mandate this one particular brand of calaculator and as a result you're paying $100 for 20+ year old piece of technology, it IS a great calculator.

There's still demand for them because schools dictate that they are bought. Then there's egg on students' faces when the teacher breaks out a bin of loaner calculators on exam day.

Did you not make it past algebra? Graphing calculators are essential for stats and calculus.

I had a programmable non-graphing calculator (with a dot matrix display), which was great for tests, because it looked like a mundane model, but you could create a program that was just REM statements of whatever notes/formulas would be helpful.

Actually I did take one calc class where calculators werent allowed so youre right. Stats on the other hand makes absolutely no sense not to use a calculator.
