Curious how this will go in the future with ever-increasing technology. If someone can generate an approximation of someone's voice without the utilization of samples, will they have a case? If someone makes a similar but distinct voice, will they have a case? All this AI stuff is a very messy can of worms.

its far worse than that

imagine if say when we catch corruption on video if the news just reports "its a deep fake" even if its not a deep fake

the truth its self is in danger with this technology

Automation has been taking away manual labor jobs for over a century, only now is it doing something that effects art jobs more. Some people who smugly said "learn to code" a few years ago are quickly changing their tune now that automation is effecting them. Saying a voice can be owned is a nebulous concept, people have been imitating people forever. Hell, a lot of times voice actors are replaced with someone who sounds similar.

The biggest issue is our terrible economic system that is not prepared for the potential of a lot of people losing their jobs. We really will need to implement something along the lines of basic income.

A company or person using an AI voice because it is cheaper than hiring a real person is automation.

I think the work around would be, to copy their voice up to 90% accuracy and then just argue is a voice that's similar but not the actual voice.

And then just spam this 'Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.'

IMO, there is nothing inherently wrong with AI Voices. However, the means of acquiring said AI Voices is problematic. If there was a way that your voice could only be used with given consent, that'd be perfectly fine IMO.

I mean they could easily find a sound alike that isn't as experienced and get them to sign away their voice rights. For example, say Matt Mercer sells his voice to AI, then that AI is used for all Troy Baker roles, is Troy Baker's voice really being stolen if his name isn't being credited to the AI?

I don't see how that's any different to soundalike (human) voice actors. As long as they're not claiming it's actually the person it's mimicking, I don't think there'd be a leg to stand on.

And automation is a theft of workers' arms, and a degradation of their rights as workers as they are no longer needed as such.

The chickens have come home to roost, Champagne Socialists -- they're coming for your jobs now, and you think us working class will defend you?
After the absolute disdain you showed when automation came for our jobs? I even remember further back... I used to be a weaver, but in 1850 when the automatic loom came, none of you were there to defend me.

This is largely where I land on it. If someone sells voice rights for the use in AI, go for it but otherwise it's theft.

AI is the future, being able to create a lot of products without having to pay people for it? In theory one person could create music, games, scripts for various tv shows, films, tv ads, various web shows, porn and publish books without ever having to go through the hassle of paying physical actors, voice actors, directors, writers and all that other stuff.

I think so?
I dunno... if I make a movie (let's say hands drawn or CG animation) with likeness of famous actors/actress in the role, would they have a case against me?
What if they weren't actors/actresses but just famous people (politicians, athletes)?
What if they were just normal people I saw off the street?

There must be a precedence for this (well, for the visual variation).

We are getting dangerously close to the point that AI will replace so many jobs that the majority of humanity has no purpose other then how much" Amusement" they can give there masters.

Its already gotten to the point where more and more careers charisma matters more then anything and no matter what you do all that matters is" how many clicks you get." We are running into a point where someone's only worth is entirely how fun you are, and there are a good chunk of folks who think AI will make it so that " stupid awkward pepole will no longer have any worth so lets purge the world to keep it " pure".

It could get really ugly as only the" Soldiers" the " programmers" and a few other pepole will have any worth and everyone else will just be left to live to suffer till they are thrown out.

I remember when the attitude was: "In the future, automation will replace all the menial jobs and we'll all be spending our time in leisure and making art"

Now that art turns out to not be immune from automation, there's a huge uproar. The root problem is and always has been capitalism.

Sounds bleak but that's exactly where it's gonna go, Automation and AI will be capable of doing a lot of things and as such the competition for the remaining jobs will be fierce, this is also a net gain for corporations because with a job pool that full of people it means they can lower wages, regulations, probably won't even have to provide insurance or obey OSHA regulations in the future, oh and let's not forget the rollback of child labor laws
