He should ask himself if there's any way he can reconcile his insecurites or accept that he doesn't think it will work out as a relationship. Not committing to a long-term relationship because of someone's occupation is a totally valid option. It's not that you don't love them, just that it would be messed up to ask them to quit (especially if it's their passion) on your behalf and based off the occupation it may not be fair to the partner/spouse to demand that they accept the negative aspects that could come with that. Like I mentioned with soldiers and also law enforcement, not wanting to spend your day wondering if your spouse is going to die is valid. Being a medical doctor is a noble profession, however it requires long and often unexpected hours, so the partner raising the kids is valid in not wanting to be suddenly stuck rearranging their day, calling into work, figuring out to do with the kids, etc., because their spouse got a call at 3 a.m. and left a note by the coffee pot.

In Jonah's case, he can't cope with the fact that she's not wearing jeans and a hoodie (I guess) while surfing, I think that's a far less legitimate and silly reason, however he's still justified in accepting that her career will make them incompatible if he truly sees no remedy to his insecurities.

And that's not even getting into him trying to control who she associates with, just taking issue with her career.

I did not read anything that mentions anyone being forbidden to talk to others at work. Hill did mention boundaryless inappropriate friendships with men. If you read something else, then Im open to seeing it, otherwise I think you used a straw man-like example.

Regardless, he has standards and boundaries, which he made clear. Then she went public with it. She must be insecure.

Youre talking to a guy thats been married for five years bro. No one is perfect. Even after being together for 10 years I still have faults my wife tolerates and she has faults I tolerate. Thats just life. Luckily none of them are deal breakers but its down to each person to work out where their limits are. The accommodations we make for each other might be seen as weird to an outside eye.

Yeah definitely. Every relationship is different. Some people are just insecure. If thats a deal breaker to someone I completely understand why. Me and my wife are both insecure in different ways but we accept that and do our best to put each others minds at ease.
