[LFAQs-redacted-quote] Sure it is, I mean what else is the purpose of the topic but to laugh at people who are obese? It's certainly not to provide information, because it doesn't do that. And even if you were to argue that it does, it doesn't do so in a way that is productive or helpful. They made a snide comment because they wanted to troll on an internet message board. People like to act like 'fat shaming' is helpful, but it's really not. That's because shame is not a strong motivational factor. I mean you can't shame the topic creator out of being an asshole. If you could shame people into losing weight as some people believe, the obesity epidemic would be a thing of the past. There are many contributing factors to obesity, including genetics, socioeconomic status, and yes caloric intake and expenditure. It's funny how these people believe they have the ultimate solution, yet...they aren't making their billions solving the problem. Dancedreamer posted... People like to act like 'fat shaming' is helpful, but it's really not. That's because shame is not a strong motivational factor. That's not true, shaming can be a very effective motivator. The reason fat shaming doesn't work is because we shame the result, instead of the behavior. Tobacco shaming works because we shame people for smoking, not for having lung cancer. But fat shaming is different. We rarely shame the behaviors that lead to obesity until you're already obese. If you're thin, you won't be shamed for eating junk food or spend your weekend binging a TV show. You won't be shamed until you've reached a point where it's much more difficult to do anything about it. Also, because you're being shamed for who you are rather than concrete actions you can just stop doing, it's a lot harder on you psychologically. Which then makes it easier to fall into a spiral of depression or self-hate where you keep making things worse for yourself.
