Ideally something you play fairly often. Or something that's lasted you a really long time.

I used to have a few games like this but they were either destroyed by bad updates or I naturally lost interest eventually.
With my favorite games, it's like there's a cooldown timer. I've played them a bunch so now I try to play them in short bursts, so the law of diminishing returns doesn't get a chance to kick in.

Pretty much all of them. I don't really have any negative experiences with games.

Pokemon
My favorite is Colosseum, but the downside is I have to space playthroughs out since the Shadow Pokemon are the same every time and there's no wild encounters.

Both? I don't play either much, but I find it really hard to go back to 1, partners work differently, no superguard and all that.

Hearthstone Battlegrounds

As with every game like this there have been some bad metas, however I've pretty much consistently enjoyed it since it came out (I think 2019).

With a code that lets you start off with more stuff right?
I don't have the patience for the opening and having to get the dash from Chill Penguin.
I play the classic games normally but with X I'm most likely to get X4, 5 or 6, put in the Ultimate Armor X code and just power trip.

The Yakuza series actually became my go to comfort game. This includes the Judgment series, yet I have not played the Ishin game yet. I did need a break since I literally played them all within 2/3 years.

I still think I could certainly play it now but for blah I am over thinking I'll get Ishin someday.

This is going to be a random post but it used to be Bubble Bobble way back in the day on the NES. That sugary sweet repetitive music and just something about trying to make some progress and eventually failing was still so oh shit.....

Double Dragon II on the NES for sure. I just really got that one. I still like Bubble Bobble but I don't think I could enjoy it as much now but I still love to play Double Dragon II or River City Ransom even. Gimme those Dragon Feet.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I'll quote ya but a lot of times I just like to use ^ still. I love Bubble Bobble it's great how you can only get the true ending with two players and was actually made for the arcade as to try and make couples play arcade games together and not against each other. I have some random RCR games on my 3DS. There was this bizarre one that I actually never downloaded but since the 3DS shop is now dead rip. But it was like a short medieval RCR game.

Man, that's a much better question. "Do your comfort games ever fail you?" I should have come up with that. The topic title was originally something like "Do you ever play one of your favorite games and not have fun at all?" but I didn't feel like it conveyed what I wanted to ask.

As for Yakuza, are you talking about doing multiple laps of all of them? Or is it your first lap through the series? I'd be really hesitant to use the phrase comfort game if it was still my first run-through.
My local Yakuza series obsessive has played them a few times. Last I checked he was trying to breathe new life into them by broadcasting his playthroughs.

And yea 0 was around when I was playing Lost Judgment actually.. I didn't immediately buy the Judgments when they were new. I was holding off b/c I wanted my Yakuza fix still.

Minecraft.

Like you describe, there's a cooldown timer. I start a new world, play for about a month, put it down for a year, then start a new world, then play for a month or so. With the update schedule, there's a new wrinkle every year.

i can beat the game in under 40 minutes, so honestly getting to the boots takes me probably less than 5 so i'm good lmao

I replay X and X3 fairly often (I understand why people hate X3 but I still love it) and i don't need codes I just know them too well. I don't know if I would be as patient for X5 and 6 in particular so yeah i get what you're saying
