I wish 1 had no relation to the other games at all and wasn't ruined in that manner... X's story was the weakest part of the game and completely back-loaded (plus cliff-hanger 'twist') and 2 and 3 just can't leave things alone and are compelled to create some Kingdom Hearts tiered story-telling involving constant use and re-use of characters (and copies of characters) that had complete arcs. I generally enjoyed the plot beats of XC2 (not the individual character interaction and dialogue) up until ~~klaus is actually still alive but half of his body is being consumed by a black hole and the klaus you fight in XC1 is a DARK version that wasn't ever the REAL klaus.~~ --- move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. Seeing that the two games were linked, happening at the same time, and all because of one dope scientist messing with ultimate power. He's still Klaus. He just went kinda crazy in one universe. The callbacks to previous games are for the veteran players and they largely have done a good job with it. XC2 fleshed out Klaus/Zanza, not hurt it. Klaus/Zanza was uninteresting as a character in XC1, and 2 fixed that. XC2 provided the context that the same man can change depending on circumstances. Zanza is not a "dark version" of Klaus...it is Klaus, just under different circumstances: what would happen if someone like Klaus saw his experiment come to fruition. Meanwhile Klaus in XC2's world shows what someone like him would become if his experiment failed. It humbled him, made him feel persecuted/punished from on high, and tried to seek forgiveness. Also, seeing Melia and Nia become queens in XC3 is cathartic for people who played their respective games because it showed how they grew. It's not like they're pulling a Finn and disregarding their previous growth just to re-tell it again. They could have made 3 the Endgame of the series but they told a new story with a theme that resonates with the series as a whole.
