In most states it's highly unlikely that a judge would have done the same. He'll be up for Parole in 15 years but he's 62. Of course, you can have someone else do it for you but then that's another law you broke as well as the person who did it for you. Also, if he was driving under the influence without a valid license, how is he not already serving time? Like, did he do these in between serving time for the other ones? Drunk driving is an incredibly stupid, dangerous and selfish thing to do. Get caught once, and provided no one is hurt, I think you should not have your whole life completely destroyed, but like you should have an interlock installed and you should have mandated substance abuse counciling and a one year ban on the consumption of alcohol, with random screenings to see if you violated it. Also have mandated substance abuse counseling. Essentially try to treat the cause. Your second DUI? Fucking throw the book at them. Jail time, heavy fines and a lengthy license suspension. You got your chance to make your selfishness not completely destroy your life. The system tried to help rehabilitate you instead of straight ruining you. And you threw it away. Also I basically think all cars should have mandated interlocks. Yes there are ways around them, but they would dramatically reduce "accidental" DUIs by taking the judgment aspect out of the occasion.
