Man walks his dog on the street, gets attacked by two pit bulls. Shoots and kills one, the other pit bull runs off.
Patrolling officer in the area comes by and attempts to secure man's firearm, ends up accidentally shooting him in the leg while he had his hands up.

On Monday, around 4:30 p.m., police say a 62-year-old man was walking his dog near 20th and Chew streets when two freely roaming pit bulls approached his dog. They say the bigger of the two pit bulls began attacking his dog and the man attempted to pull the dogs apart, but the pitbull kept biting his dog.

Thats when he shot twice at the larger dog, killing it. The other dog ran off into a nearby alley.

He said he then spotted an officer who was patrolling the area near 21st and Conlyn streets, just north of La Salle University, and approached him, telling the cop he had just fatally shot a freely roaming, large pit bull who had attacked his smaller dog.

Edmiston, 50, said, in response, that the firearm first needed to be secured, then they could go tend to the dog.

The man obliged.

As the dog owner had his hands above his head, and the officer was trying to secure the firearm, police say the gun went off, and the man was shot in the leg.

Edmiston then drove the man to the hospital, where he is expected to physically recover.
Police say Edmiston is now on desk duty, pending the outcome of an investigation by the District Attorneys office and the Officer Involved Shooting Investigation group.

Why did the man have to put his hands up? It sounds like he was being honest and peaceful to the cop, and cooperative.

Sounds like an accident, but it only highlights the cop's incompetency.

Curious that they didn't give any info on the man, tho.

I agree. Just based on the picture, the cop was being equally threatened by the pitbulls and was trying to get the situation under control. Shitty situation all around but I don't think the cop did anything wrong here. It was an accident and the tension of it all... it doesn't seem like it was a situation where the cop could just easily and calmly secure the weapon. Imo, the 2 humans did nothing wrong. The 2 pitbulls are to blame.

These cops should be Investigated by the DOJ, charged, and imprisoned for reckless endangerment!

The cop was secretly a pit bull all along.
