I understand what the celebrities are saying. This is some backhanded shit. At the same time, every company has been trying to monetize everything the past year. It's scummy behavior, but most of us have had to pay up. So celebrities can too.

I think the problem isn't paying it's that ANYONE can pay to "verify" their fake account then proceed to post whatever they want.

I'm not sure if they changed that, haven't been keeping up.

If someone doesn't want to pay the $8 a month, which is understandable, but still wants to have a presence on twitter, it would be very easy to link some sort of verification (on their official website for example) in their twitter bio, twitter display name, or even every tweet.

If that isn't good enough then it is about the $8. Especially for these celebrities whom it means nothing to. I mean, I remember back when "free speech" on social media sites was the big issue, the argument against being able to say whatever you want on social media is that social media companies are private entities and have the right to moderate their websites the way they see fit. That hasn't changed. It's important to remember that no one needs to use twitter.

In fact, it's pretty obvious that people's politics are directly affecting their views on this story. Nothing good will ever come from this discussion, so I'm out of here. Say whatever bad things you want to about me.

It's very clearly the case that the issue is that a mark which used to be an identifier to confirm identity is now completely unrelated to identity, but people will abuse the decade or so of burned in cultural knowledge to impersonate people and systems to manipulate society.

What verification could they post? Maybe a mark of some kind? Blue or some other color perhaps?

Also people only read headlines nowadays so any fake account can do damage. People wont be like "ooooooo, i was looking into it and this is a fake account". The damage will already be done by the mouth breathers who want their "enemies" to mess up and by the "journalists" who need a story for their junk website.

Yep. Twitter is full of reactionaries, nobody thinks before hitting reply so they see something that looks legit they run with it. This has been an issue even with actual verified status, it's only going to be much worse with the fake shit anyone can just buy.

The blue checkmark thing is probably my favorite thing Musk has ever done if only because it lost Eli Lilly big money because an account impersonated them and posted something that, in a just world, would be true.

Only a matter of time until Twitter is threatned of lawsuits due to a rise of phishing scams.

They should have left Twitter after Elon supporting all the racist and offensive tweets he and others had made. Not a big deal if they're unverified. More reason for them to leave.

The impersonation issue is def something they can be sued for since it can be used to influence a ton of people.

My wife uses it to get up-to-the-minute updates when there's power outages, flash flood warnings, fires, and other pertinent information during emergencies or natural disasters. You can't find that information anywhere else.

Except Twitter has the advantage of having these critical updates show up in their regular news feeds. They don't have to actively check the city's webpage when what they need to know is right there already.
