It blows my mind that someone would question a scientist with 3 degrees and 20+ years of experience in a field.

Or questioning a doctors advice or expertise. Doctors have to go through an undergrad, 4 years of med school (at an insanely high price), pass multiple GIANT exams that take like 6-8 hours to complete, then do 4+ years of residency while getting paid very little while paying off debt before they even officially become a doctor.

Has society gotten dumber? Or does the internet make people over-confident in their ability to do research?

How come when I put on a labcoat, not everyone treats me like Im smarter than them?

Neh. I know it's not that simple. There's actually a lot of studying. You can still be misled though. Id never blindly believe anything. Need that proof

I think people who don't go to the doctors alot think doctor's know way more than they do. You realize it's still a big guessing game once you're in the shits. The world isn't at conclusions for the most part as a whole

Because a lot of experts are very good at speaking very generally regarding potentially very specific situations, which makes it knowledge/advice that won't necessarily be applicable.

But true, a lot of not-experts are also just very dumb.

I agree. Im not blowing off what they say. Im coming with the understanding to listen with an open ear, but keep understanding they can still be wrong even with their experience.

One time I went to this doctor's office for the first time. Im a skinny dude. His scale said I weighed 100 pounds and I was like "that's wrong. I weigh 130 pounds". This dude kept asking me why I thought I lost weight. This guy couldn't tell the difference between a 5'9" guy that's 100 pounds vs 130. Sometimes, idiots skate by man.

That's not to mention how they took out my gobladder for a misdiagnosis and how a dentist made me leave with a click in my jaw because he left me in the chair pryed open for 3 hours without returning.

But yeah...let me keep blindly following their orders like a sucker.

Now, this is not to say I haven't met some doctor's I actually like. But you go through all that and still be like "Oh, another expert. Let me blindly get fucked over again. Derpa durp"

That's fair. But my posts are to show him he shouldn't be so quick to judge people weary of experts. Cause he doesn't know their experiences. Like most my posts, it's tackling a middle area of the conversation. I could probably elude to that a lil better, but now I am lol.

But yeah, Ill trust an expert over a self diagnose all day. Especially because Im very familiar with how much the mind can create "imaginary" symptoms. I put imaginary in quotations because it's still a very real feeling, it's just not real in the sense of being a physical ailment.

There's been a systematic effort to instill distrust in experts and the educated. Which is why you have the majority of people saying shit like "they can still be wrong!", which of course is really an indication that they devalue those opinions. An layman's intuition is not equally valid to that of expert opinion. You should always be weighing expert's statements more than other statements.

Occasional conflicting opinions of experts, general distrust of people who come to conclusions other than what the regular person would prefer, the personality of a given expert, etc. There are a lot of reasons people think they know more than experts. Not to say all reasons are equally valid or valid at all, but it could be any number of things causing the average nobody to be skeptical or outright hostile towards expertise.

This conversation reminds me of Mikhail Bakunins remarks on the subject from God and the State.

Does it follow that I reject all authority? Far from me such a thought. In the matter of boots, I refer to the authority of the bootmaker; concerning houses, canals, or railroads, I consult that of the architect or engineer. For such or such special knowledge I apply to such or such a savant. But I allow neither the bootmaker nor the architect nor the savant to impose his authority upon me. I listen to them freely and with all the respect merited by their intelligence, their character, their knowledge, reserving always my incontestable right of criticism censure. I do not content myself with consulting authority in any special branch; I consult several; I compare their opinions, and choose that which seems to me the soundest. But I recognize no infallible authority, even in special questions; consequently, whatever respect I may have for the honesty and the sincerity of such or such an individual, I have no absolute faith in any person.

Nah. Always question everything. Mind, that doesn't mean ignoring the advice of knowledgeable and experienced experts. But there's nothing wrong with wanting more information. Experienced people can make mistakes, and some may outright lie to you. There's nothing wrong with wanting a second, or even third opinion.

An expert can tell you things, but it doesn't mean its correct. It's up to you to double check the information or get a second opinion. You can take advice from an "expert", but they aren't all knowing. No one can be expected to know everything, as things change all the time.

Case in point, my friend went to the hospital with extreme stomach pain. The "Expert" told him to go back to school and that he was just wasting his time because he wanted to be out of school for the day and hang out with friends and he had seen it all the time. My friend.... the straight A student who has never missed a class in his life, who stays after class to work on assignments, and was working on becoming valedictorian. He went back to that same doctor 3 times in the following days and kept getting sent back home. He went to a different hospital, found out his appendix was about to burst.

My own doctor told me for years that I had Asthma and that I needed an inhaler. That doctor retired and I got a new doctor who sent me to get tested for sleep apnea, one of the tests is an Asthma test. They straight up told me that I never had Asthma based on the test results.
