These are just two of a team of "bright minds" who agreed to go on a multi-year space mission before even knowing what the mission was all about. My little head canon is that most of the team consisted not of bright minded scientists, but of opportunistic con men on the lam and with massive debts to their name, and so were more than happy to disappear off the Earth for a few years and earn huge bucks in the process.
