Seeing it everywhere these days and it definitely screams I wanna self diagnose myself with some shit to seem interesting

And it just has a certain ring to it doesnt it? Like something outta Blade Runner. Which makes me think that if we did live in that world, you know how many chronically online people would call themselves Replicants in the same vein.

When people said OCD like that. No one assumed that they really had the disorder. Which in most cases would really be OCPD. Any who that just on the level of using crazy for your wild friend. However most times when peoplebuse the term neurodivergent they are talking about a host of disorders. And most times they really have something.

According to google, there's one out of 20 people who got ADHD in Canada. That might seem like a small percentage, but it's still a high amount of neurodivergent people.

Also, some people who claim to have OCD are just perfectionist. I have met a girl whose parents had actual OCD and it was scary as fuck how obessed they were

At the end of the day what difference does labelling yourself as neurodivergent actually make? Some people have a harder time in life than others and that's unfortunate but you still got to live life the same as others and no one should give you a free pass.

Obviously this doesn't apply to people who have had a legit diagnosis from a medical professional. I'm talking about people who self diagnose.

Clearly you've never experienced something like that or you wouldn't be mocking people who mention that
.

It's absolutely a way that some people's anxiety can manifest.

Every touch, ever stray hair, every sound, all magnified to extreme levels. Everything is demanding the full attention of your nervous system and that fully overloads it.

Hope no one who cares about you has problems like this because it's clear you wouldn't care about them.

A "legit" diagnosis is not required for people to have mental disorders. Each person is the expert on what they experience.

All a diagnosis does is put a "official" name on it and maybe get treatment if you're lucky enough to afford it / have a generous medical system near you that does financial assistance programs.

I do agree to some extent and I acknowledge there are a lot of people out there who do have legitimate issues. This isn't aimed at them. But I also think it's a self fulfilling prophecy in some regards as well. My wife is a teacher and says that there are a lot of kids now who are a lot less able to deal with the usual stresses and strains in life because as soon as they hit a road block there is a tendency to instinctively claim "mental health issues" rather than deal with the issues at hand and a lot of the time it doesn't come from the children themselves but their parents.

@shockthemokney is absolutely right when he says:

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

There is a difference between the people who diagnose themselves because they want to deal with whatever they are going through and those who want to use it as an excuse. I think sometimes people forget this side of things.

Ok brain science man

Only it's true. No one can tell someone what they are experiencing except themselves.

Others can put context behind it, guide them in how to deal with it, but they are not the ones experiencing it day in and day out.

Completely agree with the lack of diagnosis. Here in the UK it can take 18-24 months to get a severely affected child diagnosed. If you are borderline you have no hope.

A phenomenological approach may work in adults but I'm not sure it's suitable for children who are either a) influenced by their parents, peers or what they see in the media or b) lack the life experience to actually know whether what they are feeling is normal or an actual issue. You can have two people with the same exact issues and they will potentially have two very different reflections on what they are going for.

Phenomenological approach may be useful in some circumstances but not if we're suggesting that purely because the mental health resources aren't there. I completely agree kids don't get enough resources to assist them but I also think part of this issue is that parents don't spend enough time with their kids (potentially not their fault due to how the home has differed in recent decades with both parents needing to work) and they rely more and more on the teacher to, not just educate kids, but raise them as well.

You are the only one that experiences what's going on in your body. Obviously you should trust your guesses about what's going on rather than see an oncologist.

It's called an analogy. Do you understand analogical reasoning?

People might say my statement was silly, because while you may be the only person with direct access to your body, you may not be aware of everything that's happening in your body, and the things you are aware of you can easily misinterpret. The same exact thing is true of your brain. This doesn't change simply because you've moved organ systems.

Thanks for telling me that I didn't go into a doctor's office knowing exactly what I was dealing with when all I needed was a referral to get therapy and medication to help treat it.

Sure was surprised when ... oh wait was diagnosed exactly as I knew I would

This isn't the 50s where medical information is basically arcane to all but those who study it

Sure, people might not be able to grasp the full scope of what they have, what is best to treat it, but acting as if undiagnosed people somehow can't even begin to understand what they are suffering from is absolute horseshit
