In old norse the name of Fenrir, the big wolf guy who was completely wasted in Gog of War Ragnarok is "Fenrislfr", which translates to "Fenrir's wolf"

So Fenrir isn't exactly the wolf itself. It's a Frankenstein's Monster situation.

So who the hell is Fenrir?

the correct translation is "fen-dwelling wolf." A fen is a low, marshy land often flooded with water

Because comic books aren't historical accounts of what they believed, would be my guess...

All I've ever known and can still find on the subject is that "Fenrir's wolf" is simply Fenrir itself.

Because Marvel's (and GoW's) Norse mythology take heavy liberties with the actual mythology. For instance, Hela isn't Thor's sister, but Loki's daughter. Fenrir isn't Loki (GoW)'s pet, but his son.

The game is already inaccurate.

Jrmungandr is Loki's son. But Jrmungandr has been chilling for a while when Loki is still just a child. Sleipnir is also a child of Loki's (but Loki is the mom this time) and yet Loki is again, a child.

Don't over think it.

That's the translation for Fenrir, not Fenrirsulfr. Fenrirsulfr's literal translation would be "fen-dwelling wolf's wolf".

I understand that. I'm just confused why anybody would see a topic about Norse mythology and think to talk about the characters inspired by the mythos instead of the origin.

Try creating a topic about Spider-Man and see how many people will be discussing the movies rather than the source material. Kinda the same thing. People discuss the thing they're most familiar with and in this case it'll def be MCU Thor or GoW Ragnarok.

God of War Ragnarok is capeshit.

Mythological Fenrir is a wolf, child of Loki, raised by Tyr, chained by Odin because of the Ragnarok prophecy.

I don't disagree. Just wanted the capeshit lovers who illegally snuck into the topic to have a reference point.
