I think mine also had a smaller, thinner compartment that I used for storing pens for when I needed to sign stuff. I actually still have it (while it was heavily recommended to have one, it wasn't actually provided by the casino, so I bought it myself), but I haven't used it since I left. --- The Bagel made me do it.
